Nice digg !
It would make a lot of practical sense for Harley-Davidson to score more numbers than they would otherwise do with the horrendously priced bikes. Its like paying for 2 bikes but getting one!

It will be great if the sales pick up after they move to knocked down units. If so, that could mean that the japanese SBKs might also follow suit, and we might finally get some afforable bikes out here..

Sorry, but to me, this is a typical news item made out of NO news at all. So, Harley may be considering local assembly some day to take advantage of low import duties. Hello, its OBVIOUS. Every car / bike manufacturer knows this and precisely why a majority assemble / manufacture vehicles here. Those that don't are sitting on fence, waiting for the numbers to justify local assembly....just as Harley is. Absolutely nothing new in the livemint article (not even an official quote from a harley spokesperson on the matter).

The only interesting thing, and one that the news item did not touch upon, is how Harley will manage to lower prices just 1 - 2 years after launch. Leave aside implications on the brand, the initial lot of customers (who paid CBU prices) will be infuriated.

the strategy these 'international' guys use is sell the cars at high prices and then when localization happens they continue to sell the cars / bikes at the initial prices e.g; skoda. i dont see HD reducing their prices too even if they localize.

cheers,
ac
