I have a soft corner for the Maruti Van. It was our first car and I did all my initial driving on it. Sold it a couple of yrs back when it had done 1.2 L kms.

One more thing to love Omni : It's the cheapest vehicle with the lowest Total cost of Ownership than even M800 !

HATE IT ! Known many incidents where people have lost lives in this death trap tin box. Dont want to get into an argument about 'how it can happen in any vehicle' etc. etc. A frontal impact, even a minor one is usually fatal to the front passengers. Some pics to rattle around in your head:

Hate that box but some sweet memories are there, as it was our first car in family and first ever Maruti among relatives.

These are the mosquito's of the roads along with innova's especially in Goa. Can't stand the vehicles and after driving one for the first time last year, I have more contempt for the van.

I hate Omni's because majority of them have these Bull bars in the front and come with shody worn out tyres (real hazard on 4 wheels). I have had a bang from one of them 6 years back on my Santro and had to spend 28K to get my Santro fixed. Most of it was claimed through insurance though.

I don't find any reason to hate the Omni, why should one hate a car, you either buy it if you like it, or don't buy it if you don't like it.

I have some good memories of the Omni High roof we had a long time ago, and we actaully did some long trips on the same, never did the car complain.

Omni is one car i would love to drive again, this was our 1st car and i learned to drive from this car.

We did many trips in this and we used to do it with 8-10 people in the car and we used to use the space to the fullest.

safety: 0/10
utility: 9/10

I know some people may differ on this, but this is one car that is neither comfortable for the driver, nor the passengers. Highly unsafe in the event of a shunt as well.

In 1998, my elder sisters wedding was planned in Hosur, Tamil Nadu.

We had huge amounts of luggage to be carried.

The rear seat of our 94 model Omni was removed and it swallowed all of the luggage.

I drove it alone for the 1800 kms it did in those 7 days.

Not a single problem throughtout the distance. Remember then the highway was a two lane.

We till today dont know why the keys fell in my hands and why i did the journey alone.

We still have that van, now completed 1.5 lakh kilometers and still going strong.

Agreed it was not safe, not comfortable, not powerful but this little van always brought a smile to my face and it still does

Omni is a vehicle good on space , reliability. But scores very poorly on safety I guess. The very fact that there is no engine between the driver and the obstacle he/she might possibly hit in case of an accident is very scary.
Its utility value is immense but then had Maruti taken care of this from a safety point of view it would have been better.

Completely agree with it. The comfort is pathetic. Maruti should have done something in this area.

And I disagree. Comfort, compared to other cars in the early to mid 90s, was much better. No other car offered such ease of ingress and the rear legroom. Add to that, the dicky where I spent many a journey sleeping !!
The only thing missing was the AC, but we were not used to it then so did not miss it much
