Automatic Battle: Mahindra XUV500 vs Mahindra Scorpio vs Hyundai Creta

Automatic Transmission being the latest addition and A Must in this segment, most of the manufacturers are upgrading/adding to have the grip on the market share that is being commanded by AT's currently thanks to the growing traffic and congestion in cities and people migrating towards AT for a comfortable drive.

I have put down this comparison between the 3 cars:

re: Automatic Battle: Mahindra XUV500 vs Mahindra Scorpio vs Hyundai Creta

I would like to end it by adding some more information regarding the cars especially their '+' and '-'

Mahindra XUV 5OO

What you’ll like:
  • 6-speed AT is smooth & capable. Superbly mated to the mHawk diesel
  • Available with AWD & in the fully loaded variant (unlike the Hyundai Creta)
  • Well-engineered, contemporary SUV with a value-for-money price tag
  • Acres of space on the 1st & 2nd seat rows
  • Competent engine delivers fantastic driveability & highway performance
  • Balanced ride & handling package
  • Safety kit includes 6 airbags, ESP with rollover mitigation, ABS + EBD and all-wheel disc brakes
  • Expansive feature list (sunroof, touchscreen ICE, powered driver's seat, cruise control etc.)

What you won’t:
  • Absolutely no luggage capacity with all the seats in place
  • Cramped 3rd seat row is best suited to children only. A sliding middle row is sorely missed
  • Ordinary interior quality. Still has a lot of scope for improvement
  • Niggles & issues, as reported by existing XUV500 owners
  • Mahindra's inconsistent sales & service experiences

2015 Facelift:

XUV 5OO Facelift

Automatic Variant:

XUV 5OO AT

__________________________________________________ __________

Mahindra Scorpio

What you'll like:
  • Same popular SUV package, now improved in the 2014 avatar
  • Robust, abuse-friendly build & construction
  • Aggressive front-end styling. Has good street presence
  • mHawk turbo diesel is a jewel of an engine. Great driveability, performance & fuel economy
  • New chassis brings better road manners
  • 4x4 available on S4 variant too. More affordable than the Safari 4x4 & Duster AWD
  • The Scorpio enjoys strong resale value in the used car market
  • Features: 6" touchscreen system, GPS navigation, projector headlamps, LED tail-lamps, auto-headlamps & wipers, cruise control, 17" rims etc.

What you won't:
  • Ride quality, though improved, is far from plush. Still gets bouncy & bumpy
  • Surprisingly limited 2nd-row legroom in an SUV of this size
  • Overdone rear end styling. Also, decade-old body shell shows its age
  • Fit & finish leave a lot to be desired. Rough edges are plentiful
  • Price of the higher variants is dangerously close to the more accomplished XUV500
  • Niggles & issues, as reported by existing Scorpio owners
  • Mahindra's after-sales service quality is a hit or miss. Remains a gamble

Scorpio
__________________________________________________ __________

Hyundai Creta

What you’ll like:
  • An all-rounded urban SUV. Perfect size for Indian cities...good looking too!
  • Well packaged interiors offer sufficient legroom & headroom
  • Excellent 1.6L petrol & diesel engines. Awesome refinement levels
  • Automatic + diesel combination available. 6-speed AT is very smooth
  • Balanced suspension offers comfortable ride quality & neutral handling
  • Hyundai's reliability, competent after-sales & 3 year unlimited kms warranty
  • Equipment such as 6 airbags, ESP, touchscreen ICE, hill-start assist, reversing camera & more

What you won’t:
  • Premium pricing! Most BHPians feel that it's overpriced by Rs. 1 - 1.5 lakhs
  • Several missing features, big & small. Disappointing at this price point
  • Petrol MT & Diesel AT are unavailable in the SX(O) trim
  • Rear seat is more suitable for 2 adults, not 3
  • No AWD capability like the Duster & XUV500. Adventure tourers, look elsewhere
  • Some competitors offer you 3 seat rows for the same money
  • Waiting periods have already begun. Over 6 months in many cities

Hyundai Creta

Thanks for reading.

Re: Automatic Battle: Mahindra XUV500 vs Mahindra Scorpio vs Hyundai Creta

Thread moved from the Assembly Line to the SUVs Section. Thanks for sharing!

My pick is the XUV500 AT. Having recently test-driven it, I'm very impressed with the all-roundedness of the package. Scores in every important area, be it engine, transmission, space, features, ride & handling. The AWD makes it sweeter. Considering the XUV500 has been on sale for 4 years, most of the initial niggles have been sorted out too.

That said, I can totally understand why so many would prefer the Hyundai Creta. It feels & drives like a regular sedan, has a finesse that the XUV500 doesn't, will be more reliable in the longer term and Hyundai's after-sales is A+. Owning the Creta will definitely be more fuss-free than the XUV500. Plus, the Creta's footprint is of a more 'city-friendly' size.

Scorpio AT? No ways. It's too cramped, the ride gets bouncy & bumpy, the interiors are the worst of this trio and the SUV simply feels too old / outdated. Unless there is an absolute need for a body-on-frame SUV or proper 4x4 with a low range, there's no way I'd buy a Scorpio today. Not even if someone put a gun to my head.

Re: Automatic Battle: Mahindra XUV500 vs Mahindra Scorpio vs Hyundai Creta

My pick would be the XUV AT mainly because I have been head over heels for it since it was launched but as destiny would have it no matter how much I tried we got a Beemer over it and Im happy with it. But whenever I see a XUV i look at it and the guy stares back at me thinking "Why the hell is a Beemer guy staring at me?!" Anyways I would also like Creta AT but only if it's available with the topmost variant SX(o).

Re: Automatic Battle: Mahindra XUV500 vs Mahindra Scorpio vs Hyundai Creta

Of the three it has to be the XUV500 and Mahindra has to be appreciated for offering a top spec AT variant. I still can't understand why Hyundai and Ford don't provide Automatics in top end versions! Come on guys, most who buy Automatics are not much bothered about mileage and all, they won't mind shelling out another ₹75000 or ₹ 100000 for the top end. For most it would be around a months income.
This segment is the one to watch out for, ₹ 14- 24 lakh segment, in another 4-5 years those who were buying ₹8-13 lakh cars/suv now would be graduating to this segment . Hope Maruti would launch Vitara/Grand Vitara by that time.

Re: Automatic Battle: Mahindra XUV500 vs Mahindra Scorpio vs Hyundai Creta

The XUV5OO is my pick because apart from the +'s and -'s mentioned above, it's a true-blooded SUV something which the Creta isn't. Scorpio is nowhere in the comparison due to points mentioned above.

Also, I can choose from 3 different variants for the diesel AT in the XUV but only 1 variant in the Creta . And there is the added advantage of additional seats, better ride and the feeling of being an intimidator in the rear view mirror of the car in front !

This aptly summarises all the reasons I'd pick the Creta A/T over the 5OO if it was just a choice between these two. Personally I need the more city friendly footprint and the sedan like convenience much more than the additional space.

I don't mind having a few features less so long as what is present is well fitted and works. Its easy to get used to not having some features (neither my Civic nor my beemer come with keyless entry - my modest Nissan Sunny did though). But to have something constantly rattling or breaking or coming loose in front of your eyes is just super annoying. I would have to get it fixed.

Now in that very specific scenario, I would buy the Scorpio. After all you've got to LIVE if you want TO DRIVE!

Re: Automatic Battle: Mahindra XUV500 vs Mahindra Scorpio vs Hyundai Creta

I would base my decision on basis of how many seats do you want in the car. If the third row figures on your list of requirements then it is the XUV. Otherwise it has to be the Creta. Seeing the kind of traffic that is present in most cities these days, I have started valuing interior quality and premiumness more than the engine specs. And Creta is the obvious choice then if you do not need that extra third row of seats.

Thanks a4anurag for this poll. Perfect timing !

Chose the XUV AT because of the VFM it offers. Its a class bigger has got more features and is spacious.

Re: Automatic Battle: Mahindra XUV500 vs Mahindra Scorpio vs Hyundai Creta

Well given that I am a XUV owner, choosing XUV AT was kind of no brainer. There are lots of positives for XUV but its the engine that really stands out for me. The sheer drive-ability of the engine still amazes me.

Anurag in your mid variant comparo, I dont see any reference to side air bags and ESP in safety for W8. Its an important item over Creta.

Re: Automatic Battle: Mahindra XUV500 vs Mahindra Scorpio vs Hyundai Creta

Though I am a Scorpio fan, but seeing the report of AT XUV, I think its a no brainer that XUV AT makes much more sense.

I love Scorpio, but XUV is plush when compared to Scorpio. Creta is just a hatchback which is bumped up, not really an SUV.
