If you want a mod-friendly vehicle, try getting a user Fortuner or Endeavour. I'd recommend the former.

The Fortuner is very popular in Africa and Australia - so getting parts shouldn't be hard.

I have the 3L Fortuner MT 4WD version.
It is super reliable and can munch miles.
I have done Bangalore-Bhutan, Bangalore-Arunachal and there were zero issues.

On highways, i get anywhere between 12 and 13 kmpl and can cover close to 1000 kms between refills.

You gotta drive sensibly keeping in mind how tall the car is and the bad brakes it comes with.
Other than that, it would fit all your needs.
Cheers..

Good points. I am also evaluating the new entrants like MG Gloster. Maybe I will have to swap my current car and merge my daily use with this vehicle if the cost exceeds 20L. I have an A6 which is such a "girlfriend experience" so very hard to let go, But just cannot bear to hear the scraping bottom sounds when out on trips to anywhere off the highways.

Wow!! these are the bucket list trips I want to make. Did you stay in motels along the way? How as the experience?
