Kia Seltos vs the competition

Kia Seltos vs the competition-kia-seltos-comparison.png

Kia Seltos

What you'll like:

• A superbly engineered all-rounder that delivers a premium experience
• Handsome, contemporary styling. Looks very sharp
• We find the Seltos to be well-priced for what it offers
• Nice, user-friendly interiors with sufficient space & good quality
• Loved the 1.4L turbo-petrol & 1.5L diesel. They are BS6 compliant too
• Both the automatics - Diesel AT & Petrol DCT - are simply fantastic!
• Mature on-road behavior, including at highway speeds. A+ brakes as well
• Unusually wide variant offering. Seems there is something for everyone
• Top safety package includes 6 airbags, ESP, all-wheel disc brakes, blind spot monitor, TPMS etc.
• Impressive kit (360 degree camera, HUD, front parking sensors, Bose sound system, cooled seats, cabin air purifier & loads more)

What you won't:

• Firm suspension. Liveable, but bad roads will bother you (especially on 17" wheel variants)
• Back seat's width makes it better for 2 adults and a kid, rather than 3 adults
• Niggles are being reported by owners (details here)
• Some misses (no paddle shifters or illuminated window buttons, thinner spare tyre on top trims, no dual-tone option on GTX+ / HTX+)
• Dual-clutch ATs (like the Petrol DCT) have a history of poor reliability in India
• Diesel’s 113 BHP & 250 Nm – although adequate – are the lowest in the segment. Creta 1.6L is faster
• Extremely confusing & complicated variant spread. We still haven’t gotten the hang of it!
• Kia's after-sales service quality is an unknown. We await details in our ownership reports
• Waiting periods are already a couple of months long for some trims
• You get bigger SUVs & Crossovers for the same money (e.g. Hector, Harrier, XUV500)

Hyundai Creta

What you’ll like:

• A smart-looking urban SUV. The same successful formula, now improved in the 2018 avatar
• Well packaged interiors offer sufficient legroom & headroom
• New goodies: Sunroof, electric driver's seat, smartkey cum fitness band, cruise control, Auto Link & wireless charging
• 1.6L petrol & diesel engines are top class. Refined 6-speed AT available with both
• Butter-smooth nature! NVH levels are simply outstanding
• Balanced suspension offers comfortable ride quality with neutral handling
• Safety kit includes 6 airbags, ESP, hill-start assist & more
• Hyundai's reliability, competent after-sales & 3 year unlimited km warranty

What you won’t:

• Premium pricing strategy continues! The pricey Creta has only gotten more expensive with time
• Many missing essentials (telescopic steering, auto-folding mirrors, auto-headlamps & wipers...)
• Weirdly, the ATs are still unavailable in the top SX(O) variant! You can't have an automatic with 6 airbags
• The Automatics need stronger brakes. Their stopping ability isn't confidence inspiring
• Rear seat is more suitable for 2 adults, not 3
• Variant planning has several errors (e.g. split seats & ISOFIX unavailable on the MTs)
• No AWD capability like the Duster, XUV500 & Hexa. Adventure tourers, look elsewhere
• Some competitors offer you 7 seats for the same money

Review link

MG Hector

What you'll like:

• Big size & lots of bling for the money! We find the Hector to be well-priced
• A spacious cabin that can easily seat 5 adults. Massive 587 litre boot too
• Fiat-sourced 2.0L diesel is simply fantastic
• Compliant ride quality. Suspension is tuned for comfort
• Lots of kit (panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, electric seats & tailgate etc.)
• ‘Connected’ Tablet ICE with an embedded SIM & lovely sound quality
• 5-year / unlimited km warranty with roadside assistance
• Top safety equipment includes 6 airbags, ESP, HSA, all-wheel disc brakes, TPMS & more

What you won't:

• Awkward styling on the side & rear profiles. Looks weird from some angles
• Sloppy high-speed handling, noticeable body roll & easy understeer
• The petrol engine is “adequate” at best. Its guzzling Automatic variant is unimpressive
• No Diesel AT (Creta, Seltos, XUV500, Hexa offer this combination, which we love)
• Some annoyances like the ~6 meter turning radius, no auto-dimming IRVM, strange rpm meter…
• Small after-sales network. Service quality & long-term reliability are big unknowns
• Waiting period runs into a couple of months
• Don’t get blinded by the British branding. This is a Chinese car

Review Link

Tata Harrier

What you'll like:

• Stunning looks & strong road presence. Solid build too
• Well-priced for the package on offer
• Classy, spacious cabin with comfortable seats & a chilling air-con
• Fantastic 9-speaker audio system. Sound quality & bass are enjoyable
• 2.0L diesel offers good driveability and a punchy mid-range
• 205 mm of ground clearance + terrain response system. Latter will make monsoon driving safer
• Topnotch safety kit includes 6 airbags, ESP, break reminder, hill hold, brake disc wiping & more
• Features such as Eco & Sport modes, xenon projectors, auto headlamps & wipers, cruise control…

What you won't:

• Feels like a work-in-process beta version. Several rough areas are yet to be sorted out
• Concerns over niggles & long-term reliability. Our test cars had many problems
• Nervous steering at 100+ km/h…too light, too sensitive. Needs tuning
• Service visit every 6 months / 7500 km (12-months is the norm today)
• No automatic option in a market that loves ATs. No all-wheel drive for enthusiasts either
• Annoyances such as the massive ORVM blind spot, loud diesel >3000 rpm & some ergonomic flaws
• Tata's after-sales service quality is a hit or miss. Remains a gamble
• Missing kit (auto-dimming IRVM, sunroof, usable center armrest & dead pedal, TPMS)

Review link

Mahindra XUV500

What you’ll like:

• A well-engineered, contemporary SUV with a value-for-money price tag
• More mature styling. Front end no longer looks garish
• Acres of space on the 1st & 2nd seat rows
• Competent engine delivers fantastic urban driveability, as well as fast highway performance
• Balanced ride & handling package
• Safety kit includes 6 airbags, ESP with rollover mitigation, ABS + EBD and all-wheel disc brakes
• Expansive feature list (sunroof, touchscreen ICE, powered driver's seat, cruise control etc.)

What you won’t:

• Absolutely no luggage capacity with all the seats in place
• Cramped 3rd seat row is best suited to children only. A sliding middle row is sorely missed
• Interior quality, although better, still has a lot of scope for improvement
• Clutch is lighter now, but has a long travel range & high resting point. Gets cumbersome in traffic
• Niggles & issues, as reported by existing XUV500 owners
• Mahindra's inconsistent sales & service experiences

Voted for the Kia Seltos. Currently the best all-round package in the segment. I love its styling, cabin & driving experience. Equally, I don't like its ride quality.

For someone looking for a spacious family cruiser, the Hector is also a good option. It's no handler, yet I enjoyed cruising in it with the family on the highway.

The next-gen XUV500 & Creta are soon to be launched. I hate the new Creta's styling and hope Hyundai pulls off a surprise for India. Am optimistic of the new XUV500 too as Mahindra's R&D has really improved (saying this after the experiencing the Marazzo & XUV300).

No better time to be a customer in the 15-lakh crossover segment.

Re: Kia Seltos vs the competition

Voted for the Seltos. As things stand today, this is what i would like to bring home. Has every thing that i could possibly want in a small(ish) crossover for city use- the most important for me being a proper top end automatic with 6 airbags and LED lights. And good lord this thing looks properly good on our roads. Only thing i would change are those red highlights. If we do decide to add a 4th car to the garage that is relatively smaller to the others, this is where i would put my money.

Re: Kia Seltos vs the competition

Although old, still it's the XUV5OO for me.
I belong to a category, where either I like hatches or the full sized stuff; be it sedans or SUVs. At least I can properly sit and relax inside it.

Be it the real estate or the seating position or the overall features; I find XUV way more VFM than these 4.2m long 5 seater options. Additionally, it still has the most responsive motor too; at least in terms of in-gear performance - the 2.2 mHawk is a really sweet engine to live with.

This is going the Seltos way? We just finished the Team BHP COTY and except for the Creta and XUV 500 the other 3 were present. Expecting similar voting patterns.

It would be nice to add the Jeep Compass to the poll as well. After discounts a few Variants of the Compass will be close to the price of the top spec Seltos. Maybe even the Kona should be on this poll?

Sadly the Compass misses all the polls.

My prediction for the poll is

Rank 1 - Seltos
Rank 2 - Harrier
Rank 3 - Creta

Fingers crossed!

Re: Kia Seltos vs the competition

I would right now hold on for a few more days to my money (if I had).

Seltos : At this right moment seems to be offering too much. To me, it seems to be overloaded with technology. I am always apprehensive to bet on the latest in the market, and would wait for at-least a year to see their sales and service and spares.

Creta : I hate the looks of the new model(the images floating on the web), Period.

Hector : No thank-you. I don't like the bulky barge look and feel of the car.

Harrier : Handsome car, looks good, drives well. Awesome space for 5 with luggage and enough technology as needed. I drove a test drive car last week, which had run only 7k kms and already was rattling at multiple places. Also the ORVM was hindering my visibility at turnings, has anyone else noticed this?

XUV 500 : No space for luggage with all seats up, but as rest all are 5 seater, lets consider that we fold the last row of this car. Now, we have ample amount of space for 5 and their big bags. And, with the improvements in this car with each iteration, I would rather bet my 15L in the new one that will be out. In-fact, I personally like the current one as well.

So as I said earlier I would hold on to my money for now, but if you put me at the gunpoint, then I would probably go in for the XUV500.

Re: Kia Seltos vs the competition

Among the given options voted for Harrier. Man, whenever I see it approaching, though there only few to see, it looks stunningly beautiful. Had it come with a Toyota badge it would have been a runway success including the niggles it comes with. Seltos is definitely a more rounded product but for me it has too much bling and technology. It looked very good to see in the beginning but now looks part of crowd. It will loose its charm too soon like Verna did in its time.

Too firm at low speeds. Bad roads are annoying. Would say it's among the worst riding crossovers on broken Indian roads.

Would have loved to as well, but the list price of the Compass makes it a segment higher! Frankly, the Hector & Seltos make the Compass feel overpriced now.

Re: Kia Seltos vs the competition

I have voted for Hector.

Looking at the price and the product (size and engine power), it comes out as the bang for the buck vehicle for a 5 seater. Kia Seltos, to me, is winning because of MG's perceived brand equity of being a Chinese brand.

Re: Kia Seltos vs the competition

The Seltos gets my vote. It has redefined the phrase "Aspirational Value for Money" for an automobile in 2019.
2X, maybe 3X times over.
It stands tall way above its peers, in the sense that it looks to be the perfect car in the 15-20 lakh segment, as of today

For me, the Harrier comes a very close second. Alas, the poll doesn't recognise that. Had it come with an automatic, if there was a sunroof, if the niggles had been taken care of, and a couple of more ifs - no doubt it would have been at the top of, not just this poll but maybe the COTY as well!

Re: Kia Seltos : Official Review

I am looking forward to buy a new bs6 car, my budget is around 25 lakhs. I am looking for an mpv or an suv and it should be a diesel due to my high usage. I currently own a 2010 Innova 2.5g and it has done 225,000kms without any hassle. And i am looking for a worthy upgrade. The options i consider are
1. Toyota innova crysta 2.4zx diesel automatic
2. Xuv500 w11 diesel automatic awd
3. Kia seltos gtx+ diesel automatic
4. Mg hector sharp diesel manual
5. Hyundai Creta sx(o)crdi executive diesel manual
6. Jeep Compass limited plus diesel manual or the automatic when it comes.
Please do suggest the best option of all listed here.
Thanks.

Not exactly suggesting it. But if I could afford it, from your list I'd buy the Compass 4x4 Longitude AT (the feature list on Longitude is enough for my needs). Its about to be launched. Autocar did a review for the Compass diesel AT this week, so its about to be launched soon surely.
