New C2-segment SUV (Creta, Seltos) vs used Premium SUV (CR-V, Tucson)

Hello all, i would need your help in making the decision.

Context:
1) I need to upgrade my current car (Fabia, 2009, petrol, 40,000kms), working perfectly. But need an upgrade for "social" reasons
2) Budget <15 lacs, <5years(for used ones).
3) Usage: Very low, say 3000-5000kms per year. Mostly highway usage, for city usage we are depending on uber\ola\bus.
4) Requirements: Must be SUV(thanks to worthless bangalore roads), Must be petrol manual, not too worried about performance or mileage or running costs or resale value. But safety kit, comfort(nvh), reliability, and decent interiors takes bigger priority.
5) Options for new cars: Seltos, Creta, Kicks, etc.
6) Options for used cars: Tucson, CRV, etc.
7) Must be bigger than my Fabia. i.e. length>4meters

Other notes:
1) If i'm in a city where roads are decent, rapid rider is a no brainer for me.
2) I liked Nexon petrol a lot but that became expensive for the size on offer.
3) Tucson petrol manual doesnt even have rear AC vent
4) I dont find CRV manual in used cars ads. But for CRV, i'm okay with cvt as rest of the car is too amazing.

Voted for Tucson, CRV.

Considering your usage of 3000-5000kms per year (which is comparatively less) a SUV from Creta/Seltos segment will not come fully loaded for 15L. Also since majority of your travel is on highways, I would suggest to look through the used/pre-owned route for Tucson/Fortuner/Rexton.

Voted for others.
If budget is <15 lakh for used SUV, why not go for brand new AMT Duster? Should fit your budget. Also traffic getting worse every day, it makes more and more sense to switch to automatic at least for city commute.

Not suggesting a brand or model - Just a few points to keep in mind.

1. Usage being low - Please buy petrol variant.
2. Keep in mind that maintenance cost and usage are not always related, all scheduled maintenance has to be done anyways as per timeline, including tires.
3. Choose the segment of vehicle wisely , the maintenance costs are not proportional to purchase cost once the initial purchase price of vehicle crosses 15-20L. A vehicle whose starting price is near ~10L can cost upto 18-20 L for the top variant, such vehicles will still be relatively affordable to maintain in comparison to something from next segment which by now would have depreciated to a mouthwatering price in the used car segment.

If you are convinced on the Rapid Rider, go get it! The Rapid doesnt have any reported scrapping issues.

Owners can you please comment also (I have mentioned this basis by read on the topic only)

Thanks for inputs, but i'm not big fan of AMT or duster's interiors or ncap rating or nvh levels. Duster doesnt have single wow factor for me.

By year end, if there are any mouth watering discounts on duster i can definitely consider.

Based on your requirements, I think CRV will fit the best here due to following reasons :

1. 'Social' image will definitely be boosted.

2. Its reliable.

3. Size will not be an issue since you mainly need to drive on highways. Also, you are Ok with its CVT.

4. Personally, I do not like Tucson much. Interiors and exteriors design/ size wise, it does not look a 25-30 lacs car.

A good alterative is Compass. But, not as reliable as CRV.

If you need image, try finding a used petrol innova crysta and negotiate hard. You might not find an MT, but the AT is a pretty good gearbox from what I’ve heard.

You could consider the previous gen Fortuner, but just remember that all Innovas have a superior ride.

If your running is this low, I think the BMW X1 (first gen) may be worth a look. This is the best car for SOCIAL Image!

Available for upto 15 lakhs in some other cities. Not sure for Bangalore, but may be worth a consideration. The budget starts to look flexible when your heart likes something

Everything you said is absolutely right but, sir, I cannot live with “taxi” car. I don’t have any fragile ego but my heart just doesn’t accept!

Get a Harrier. It's big, imposing and looks stunning. Doesn't look very bad either beside say a Fortuner. If i were in your place that's what I'd get. Get Pentacare and you are sorted for 5 years at the very least.

Either a new Seltos in the top end trim or a mint city SUV [CR-V, Tucson, Tiguan or if good deals are available, then maybe, an X1 / Q3].

Personally, I would prefer a CR-V from your list over others. It is a global car so safety should be good. Being a Honda, you should get a reliable, fuss free ownership, provided the previous owner has taken good care of it. You may have to keep searching for quite some time. In case you never find a good one, you can always buy a new car. Had you not preferred a car for 'social upgrade', an Innova, either petrol or diesel would be a far better option on the highways with space and presence. People just give way to a speeding white Innova on the highways like few other cars!

If I recall correctly, only the current generation CR-V petrol came with a CVT. Rest all always had a torque converter. Quoting from our official review of the previous generation:

Cool. I'd say stick to a CR-V/Tucson as they are a segment larger than Creta/Seltos.

Re: New C2-segment SUV (Creta, Seltos) vs used Premium SUV (CR-V, Tucson)

Would any day suggest a pre-owned CR-V / Tucson / Santa Fe because you are getting a more world-class (not India-spec), faster, safer, plusher car. Get one that is relatively new & lower mileage, follow the steps listed in our Used Car Article and the risk is almost zero. Their construction is also superior + more premium = an important consideration since you clearly hold onto cars for long.

Your running is low and your highway usage demands a safer car; I mention safety again as a world-class global product sold in developed markets like USA & Europe with minimal levels of localisation will be far safer than any 15-lakh new crossover localised for India (read = cost cutting).

Don't be fixed on this. When buying used, it is important to be flexible so you don't miss out on a good car. E.g. I bought my current car even though I hated its colour. Be open to other engines & transmissions as they are all mostly good / excellent in the premium car space. Plus, in premium cars, ATs outsell MTs by a big margin.
