Looks like when you compare the Diesel AT and Petrol AT, there is not much going for the Petrol AT, apart from just being marginally quiet. And may be the emissions aspect.

I really hoped the petrol would be a high revving motor, instead it looks similar to the old 1.8 ISZ, which was punchy, enough torque, was quiet, but was no 7k revv'er.

High revvs are always a beauty of the petrols. If not, the only advantage they give is the super precise throttle control, which will be masked by the AT. So, if you ask me, I'd be stuck between Petrol MT and Diesel AT.

If I decide to buy the Thar primarily for hard off-roading(unlikely), I'd choose the Petrol MT, otherwise, the Diesel AT sounds much more practical.

So - My vote goes for the Diesel AT.

P.S - How I would love to pick up the Petrol engine and TC and plonk it into may be a CJ3B. It would be a killer!

Diesel no doubt.

The 2.2 mHawk is a legend of an engine. Despite the low running which a vehicle like Thar might have as a second/third car, the diesel is the one to pick.

No diesel dilemma for me. It's diesel any day and a AT one at that, voted the same too. I just can't think of driving a petrol engine, especially on a rugged hard core off roader as a Thar. Not to forget the range diesel can give, more so when we're to take it to less travelled hinterlands. Somehow I hate the fuel gauge on a petrol, which has some uncanny knack of a free fall and hitting the empty mark soon :)

Voted Diesel - Why?

Mahindra hasn’t provided the petrol for Test Drives to commoners, shows their commitment towards the petrol variant. Low end torque and low FE concern me as well

I would prefer the Petrol, especially this would be mostly a 2nd or 3rd car in the garage (if bought). Taking it out occasionally will cover the expense of paying a premium for the diesel.

Add to that the hassle of adding the extra additive for the diesel, would take my gamble with the petrol. BUT would definitely wait for 1 to 2 years for Mahindra to sort out the niggles of the new petrol engine.

The diesel can be preferred right away since Mahindra rarely goes wrong with the diesels.

OT, is there a review for the Petrol Manual anywhere? I really loved the Base petrol AX version, waiting for a review on it

Voted Diesel!

Mahindra knows Diesel engines like no one else in this country. Their diesel engines are robust, reliable, and can take some serious abuse. When I think of Mahindra Petrol-engine cars, the first the comes to my mind is that rare Mahindra Scorpio Rev116 which had a Renault engine mated to it (IIRC). The mating was terrible and the performance was nowhere near the 116 Bhp it boasted. I am sure their newer petrol engines are far far better, but they are yet to prove those as much as their diesels already have.

Diesel mill all the way!

Not sure if this logic of mine will resonate with fellow BHPians but Petrol gives you 150 horses at your disposal which in my humble opinion a Car like Thar may not handle well! More is not always merrier.

Diesel with 130 bhp is better placed to serve the Thar owner.

Apart from the above mHawak reliability is tried and tested. Better FE resulting in more 'distance to empty' is another and an important plus!

But I pitch for diesel MT instead of AT simply because MT gives you freedom to choose! Just wish that Mahindra finds a way to allow better foot-well space.

Boring answer: Diesel. I wish I was a little more adventurous but having always owned petrol vehicle, I would like a diesel now.
Besides, if reports are to be believed, diesel Thar is no slouch and NVH levels are well controlled which is a major gripe against MM diesels of the past.

In my mind I always have an image about diesel engines that they are more robust and can handle bad fuel better than gas engines.

This is a purely speculative vote - there is no way am I buying a Thar. But if were to, I would buy a petrol. No sense in buying a diesel car in NCR nowadays.

Voted- Petrol

Have booked the petrol A/T for myself,Anyone staying in Delhi NCR in today's day and age would most probably go for a petrol car considering the crazy 10 Year rule for diesels.
Also i guess in a few years to come this rule will get the go ahead in almost all major metros and once a car comes in the purview of this rule resale drops like a Brick in a pond :D

Now in Delhi when buying and selling cars people don't mention the running or condition of the vehicle as much as they stress on how many years it has left lol. With petrol and diesel prices hovering close to each other, savings will not be as substantial.

Voted Diesel.

I am a total petrol person and kind of anti-diesel. But in this specific case, voted for Diesel. Unless you are in NCR, I don't really think the Petrol (2L turbo will be a sure guzzler) makes sense.

But there might be some buyers outside of NCR with an anti-diesel sentiment who would prefer this.

I will decide after i do a TD of both the petrol and the diesel automatic. For me a few things I need to feel for myself before i decide:
1) How heavy does the front end of the vehicle feel between petrol and diesel?
2) Is the steering easier on a lighter petrol vs the diesel?

Does anyone have the actual kerb weight of the diesel vs the petrol thar? for some reason, i dont seem to find it anywhere including the mahindra website

Petrol. I couldn't vote, as the voting option is not enabled for me.

Though diesel has been a fuel of choice for most x-UV vehicles in India, it is time that high capacity petrols were offered as a choice too.

Mahindra has made a start with a 16V DOHC 2.0 litre petrol engine. No less. Unlike other half-hearted attempts by manufacturers such as Tata.

It will find its fair share of takers, and probably at some point Mahindra will make the engine for purist petrol-heads and enthusiasts alike!

Voted Diesel.

Having owned a 2013 Thar CRDe, a refined diesel AT in a Thar sounds like a dream. stupid:

I would mainly use it for highway runs to national parks, or to my farm or other estates, so the long-range of the diesel and the inability to get good petrol in remote locations make it an easy choice. I was intrigued by the petrol as it would be a nice change from all the diesel cars I've owned and made a good city car/weekend car, but with the reviews saying the diesel is so effective it pretty much closes the deal. I also agree with GTO that waiting a year would be the smartest decision so Mahindra can work out the niggles, but dang it's hard to wait.

I wanted to take a minute on the emission part - this is the comparison of Diesel vs Petrol emissions allowed in BSVI:
Mahindra Thar: Petrol vs Diesel-img_20201022_230150_918.jpg

While Diesels still have a 33% higher NOx, they also have a minimum 40% higher mileage than similar Petrols - which offsets this completely (and then some).

So I'll not be surprised if the auto industry tries and overturns the 10 year rule in NCR itself (or maybe not, more cars that sold off, more new sales for them).

I'm taking delivery of my Diesel Thar with no guilt trip on emissions. And neither should anyone else - the Petrol is as good/ bad as the Diesel in this aspect too.
