how about Virtus..DSG or TS as per your budget..it is a lot cheaper..has a very high GC and a pleasure to drive engines.

Unless ground clearance plays spoilsport, Tucson AWD clubbed with AT or MT tires would be ideal.

If I were you.
I would have gotten an old clean workhorse 4wd. Used Xenon , thar crdi, scorpio/ getaway etc, and a highway/urban friendly crossover.

AWD is primary used on snow, fast trails. For offroad capability you need a transfer case with low range.

A single car cannot excel at both scenarios. And your budget permits 2 different cars. Even if you buy a premium car which can also handle abuse, you wouldn't like to abuse it. So, better to buy a top end Creta/Seltos for city and good highways and something like an Isuzu DMax V-Cross for bad roads.

I cannot stretch my budget beyond 45L. :D and in no rush. Will take a few months to explore, if there are any other suggestions

Have you considered the Isuzu MUX ? Tough as nails and more comfortable than the Hilux. Plus quite a bit of savings and pretty decently specced

Strong NO for Hilux for the intended use.

If you are not in a hurry, I'd suggest next gen Kodiak.

Do test drive Xuv700 AWD, ScorpioN Xplore, Crysta along with Tucson. All these 4 cars are pretty competitive.

Since you are not in a hurry, you can wait for the Thar 5-door (Roxx). It might offer a better suspension than the 3-door, but we will only know next month.

For the terrain you mentioned, Bof is the way to go over Monocoque, I would say go for Crysta, it is comfortable, it has no problem handling light off-road, and take some abuse, if you want more ground clearance then go for Fortuner over Hilux, it will be more comfortable and practical for everyday use.

Anecdotal evidence from our use case.
It was always our Crysta (2.4 Auto) which got stuck; where as the City / Duster would struggle, but would manage on their own after a bit of prodding.
We are not sure why. Maybe it's the RWD v/s FWD and our use case was a bit of a slushy road / field.

But strangely enough, the manual Jimny in 2wd (RWD) doesn't get stuck like the Crysta.

Is Jimny a no-no here? It can go anywhere, so Bellandur or BR hills doesn't matter to it!
Assuming you are two, the front seats should be just enough, if not luxurious. You also save a damn lot of money that I would invest in the land.

I want to get rid of the Thar and Vento and get 1 car that can meet both needs i.e. comfortable for mom and also can traverse the farm road/ Bellandur terrain and is also not a pain to drive around in Bangalore traffic.

And hence the above options - Hilux is great for the farm but its not senior citizen friendly. Even city driving maybe a challenge and also no sun roof is a bit of bummer. The big pro is that it can take any terrain that is thrown at it.

Not able to get any feedback on Tuson - Diesel AWD offroad capabilites. The ground clearance might be an issue, but other than that does anyone have offfroading experience with the Tuson and can it handle some rough terrains? The rear seat ride comfort, boot space and sun roof are huge plus.

Neither.

Toyota Hilux is a lifestyle vehicle.
There will be those few hundreds who will swear by it and pay for one.
But for the large majority of us, it's not a car you can live with so easily. And not Senior citizen friendly.

A wildcard that you should check out is the Citreon C5 Aircross. This will suit both your user cases admirably.

It's well engineered, safe, refined, and comes with a good Diesel automatic and has the best ride quality.

For those for whom it matters, it has good features like panoramic sunroof etc.

You need to test drive it before moving ahead with your other options.

How about a Jeep Compass or meridian 4x4 diesel? It might be the best car to suit your case, provides the perfect blend of urban luxury commuting options along with great capability of a weekend soft roader. Fits your budget too. Ingress & egress won’t be that hard too, which would be helpful to the elderly.

You can also have a look at used Endeavours these are pretty reliable and are built pretty strong to withstand all kinds of terrains. They also have a bit of premium appeal to them with some additional good to have features that you would like (Panasonic sunroof).
Endeavour also has far more comfortable ride than fortuner or hilux when driven on city roads which would also solve your purpose of doing city errands.

I would say look no more than the Compass, if you love Thar, in my humble opinion, Jeep Compass Diesel 4X4 AT would be the best upgrade, comfortable inside and rugged enough outside to handle low to medium level of off-roading.
PS: Scorpio-N and the Thar 5 door (Roxx) releasing on August 15 is a good choice to look into as well.

Just go and get the Hilux already! We know that’s what you “actually” want to buy. 😆
There I said it.

Practically speaking a Duster AWD would have served your purpose perfectly but if the Hilux is what you truly desire then the Hilux is what you should get.
