As you correctly pointed out the replacement for the Safari is due shortly and this will definitely affect the already bad resale of the Safari. Mahindra is planning a premium SUV in the 15 lakh range. This is not the Scorpio replacement so the resale shouldn't be affected that much. They have already priced the Scorpio aggressively to position the next gen SUV in the premium bracket.

The safari replacement and Mahindra SUV, when are they expected?
If before March 2010 ( for claiming full depreciation in co. books), I will also wait for them, since I need a 7 or 8 seater other than Innova/Scorpio/Xylo/ Safari and less than 15 Lakhs OTR New Bombay.

New Safari

Rumors of new Safari is seems to be a wild Guss. yesterday met my old pal who is working as a Sales manager for Tata motors. he said quoting resent press release of tata motors MD that " TATA is developing a new generation UV plat form for various applications and which will eventually become the Core platform "

more over he said Safari is selling in good numbers

so go ahead and buy THE BEAST..

i guess the safari really needs a facelift. by facelift, i dont just mean a new grille & new headlights, a proper major facelift.

safari sells in 3 digits most of the months in a year & its competitors- innova, scorpio & xylo are enjoying the market. if TATA is satisfied, well and good.

*Good numbers* is a relative term. For Jan to Aug 2009 Tata sold 8979 Safaris as opposed to Mahindra's 21106 Scorpios. I guess the numbers are good compared to the numbers before the 2.2 vvti was launched. Safari volumes are way much lower than it' s nearest competition the Scorpio.

GTOs post referenced above does not have model specific numbers. See this thread for model specific numbers.

Safari may have sold about 1/2 as many as the Scorpio but they could potentially be making about 1L more profit per car compared say 50k to the aggresively priced Scorpio and could hence be laughing their way to the back with more overall profits than mahindra with higher sales numbers in Scorpio.

I think even if they could reprice the safari lower they may not do it to keep it a half segment premium in postioning over the scorpio. I would work out better for them in the long run, especially with the newere safari and xover coming in.

The part marked in BOLD is important. they "could be"!

ultimately what matters to the user/customer is "sales numbers" & not "profit margins".

@ACM:

I have seen all your posts about the Safari to date and agree with your unbiased opinions. Yes, the low volume Tata Safari not only makes an excellent profit for Tata. We all should help make Ratan Tata richer. The first owner also gets a *killier* resale price in the second hand market.

Your comment reminds me about the story of the little boy who fell into horse ****. He looks around wipes the poop off his face and says "Yeah !!, there is a pony around here somewhere"
