BHPian ![]() | ![]() TEAM-BHP KOLKATA CHAPTER WINTER MEET 2017 14th of January 2017 : The destination being Shantiniketan, there was a Breakfast meet at the BPCL Gopalpur Azad Hind Dhaba (aka AHD) on NH-2 where everyone assembled to meet up before the drive to Shantiniketan. There were some enthusiasts like myself who had opted out for the overnight stay and the day drive to Shantiniketan and it was a good opportunity for us to catch up with like minded BHPian brothers there. BHPians from Delhi : SS-Traveller & JKDS were also a part ofthe meet as they happened to be in Kolkata and it was a pleasure meeting them after ages. | ![]() Absolutely brilliant pictures, Samba and AJ! ![]() ![]() And Samba, special thanks to you to coax me into getting the KUV100. A pretty peppy car to drive, provided I kept the rev up, with proper road manners. And it never sprang surprises on me, with the brakes having a good bite, and the car having (surprisingly?!) a dead pedal, which I dearly miss on the Bolero. Hope you liked its TD. BHPian ![]() | ![]() Thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the meet. Must mention, it was very well organized, fun filled, eventful and engaging event! Thanks to Samba for all his efforts to ensure that the meet was a grand success. Thanks to all fellow bhpians who chipped in to make the event truly memorable. Thanks to D-bhpian SS_traveler for accepting our request and participating. My take away from this meet has been enormous, new friends, new knowledge and loads of good memories. The photos have come up really well. As we have been giggling among us, Samba have provided facebook cover photos for many of us. Thanks again Samba and Arav for the wonderful photos, each one is a keeper. Thanks for sharing. Distinguished - BHPian ![]() ![]() | ![]() That was a super shot of the Hawk-On-Fours® - soon after it completed 150,000 km, after 7 years and almost 3 months. That itself gives this pic a lot of sentimental value to me. Till the beginning of this year, I had no plan of going to Kolkata any time soon, far less join this meet - though I kept getting updates about the meet plans developing. In fact, we had already finalized plans for going to Tadoba. An unforeseen event in the close family led us to cancel the Tadoba trip and decide on a sudden trip to Kolkata between 8-12 Jan, driving back on the 13th. However, Samba, with his supreme convincing ability and resourcefulness about securing a room for us at the WBTDC Shantiniketan, made us defer our return journey by a couple of days. And indeed, it turned out to be an eventful and well-organized meet which we enjoyed thoroughly as a family. The credit goes in large measure to Samba (and Shomshree, I understand), for taking care of mudane details minutely, including the menu for lunch and dinner which was oh-so-delicious. Samba even took extra pains to take us sightseeing to Hasuli Bank, and later to arrange for my wife and daughter to shop to their hearts' content! Not common to find all of us in the rear seat, but here we are, all ready to go sightseeing with Samba - picture courtesy Cloudmobile_deb ![]() More pics to follow... Distinguished - BHPian ![]() ![]() | ![]() Men will be men, as the saying goes. Men and their machines are an inseparable part of Team-BHP meets. Families join in infrequently, and teenagers who aren't interested in cars dislike these meets. Petrol, diesel and lubricating oils are more important focal points than food. But then, with Samba and shomshree at the helm of affairs related to organizing this meet, almost everyone is willing to bring their better halves and families along, as is obvious here... (ummm... looks like H-4® attracts everyone... ![]() Here's dj78 with his family, enjoying the sun. When the send you a menu card on WhatsApp that looks like this, there's no doubt that this will be a meet to outdo any other Team-BHP meet! Well, we are committed foodies, and we really look forward to digging in! However, after a grand breakfast of parathas / makke di roti & sarson da saag and hot milky tea while enjoying the winter sun at the Azad Hind Dhaba, I doubted whether we would do justice to the lunch at the WBTDC Tourist Lodge at Shantiniketan - on top of that, I am pretty sceptical about how good the food would be, since it's a government property, and the kitchens at such properties don't really excel at producing great food. How mistaken was I... The food was exceptionally well prepared, and I ended up overeating way too much! Looks like anirbanz is trying to take away the whole tray here, but is being asked to desist! ![]() BlackPearl and Uprasenjit want to work up an even greater appetite than the others, so here they are, doing the impossible while a stiff breeze blows. |

Distinguished - BHPian ![]() ![]() | ![]() A bend in a river is not a big deal, you might say. Yes, it is, when the said bend in the Kopai river is called Hasuli Bak (hasuli being a certain design of necklace, and bak meaning a bend), and is associated with a book by one of the most revered Bengali authors by the name of Tarashankar Bandopadhyay - Hasuli Bak-er Upokatha, a book that I had read in my youth. This is what that bend in the river looks like from a satellite... ![]() ...and here we are, at the head of the two bends in the river, with Samba and SouraC. After the sumptuous lunch, Samba took my family and SouraC on a sightseeing trip in his Figo to Hasuli Bak, a place I had never imagined I'd visit. The State Highway had its own unofficial toll collection system, and we ended up paying Rs.10 at 5 places where men, women and kids from the local villages blocked the road and demanded that they be paid a chaanda (in support of myriad things like Saraswati Puja 2 weeks later, or this being the last day of Badhan Utsab for the Santhal tribals of the region). The last few km to Hasuli Bak went through unsealed, bumpy & dusty roads, and brought to the fore all of Samba's excellent driving skills, manipulating a fully loaded Figo without a single underbody scrape! Some pretty pictures later, we turned back. Last pic courtesy Samba Last edited by SS-Traveller : 23rd January 2017 at 21:43. |
