They all leak; so are unfit for carrying inside the cabin. Yes the army jerrycans and the plastic ones available in the market, they all leak.

What works best is 2 ltr Coke bottles and the 20 ltrs carbuoys that mineral water is sold in for the dispensers.

From what I have read, other cans like plastic containers leak fumes. Army Jerrycans are robust and do not leak fumes, plus can take a lot of abuse.

I tend to agree on the Army Jerrycans. Have done most long distance trips in South and North using these behemoths. The issue with plastic cans is particularly severe as it gets colder. Metal cans retain fumes and prevent vaporization.

Btw: Am keen to get onto the trip to Leh. My dad did this route during his trial convoy days in the Indian Army in the peak of winter. Those were the days that they used to light fires under the engine bay so that the vehicles would be sufficiently warm up for ignition. We're gonna be hopefully much better off.

@Premjit: Warming the diesels is still practiced by truckers and not even in severest winters.

@All: I also tend to agree regarding second hand Army cans. The lid is usually a problem but with an application of leather/rubber "seat" this is easily taken care of. I had commented on this in another thread too.

Forgive me if I've brought this up again, but do we have a handle on how many prospective bhpians we have for the trip? Maybe, if we could segregate prospects by region so there can be sharing and some amount of work/ planning/ logistics/ routes/ research delegated to each group/ region.

Any idea when does the peak tourist season start and end.
Any other dates apart from peak tourist season should be good.
For example end may can be lean season, ditto for After August?

If i'm not mistaken the season starts in the 1st week of April, when the snow is cleaned up. Season ends with the Laddakh festival, which normally happens in 2nd week of September.

Best time to visit though would be July - August.

End of season may save us no more than 500 Rs. PP on the overall trip but also keep into mind that end of season means, camps are over with & supplies also not being available as easily as it would be in August. Hence, everything that would be available would be at a premium, which would mean whatever saving done on hotel, is balanced out.

PS - Best to take Real juice from here. At leh, it's sold at approx 85Rs to a litre

1st to 15th Sept each year is the big Ladakh Festival.
After that the uncertainty of the routes being open grows rapidly.

End May is not a very friendly period. Roads are a mess, with lot of streams due to melting snow. The tents at Sarchu/Pang might not be up & running.
