Air Recirculator intermittently switches off in Polo TDI

When driving with the A/c on and with the air re-circulator, i noticed a few days ago that the, recirculator, switches off sometimes. I noticed this when i can suddenly smell that the air inside the car smells different or i can smell the exhaust of the car in front of me only to find out that it switched-off on its own. I've looked online and did not find any similar issues and no-one on tbhp mentioned having this problem.

The car is less than 2 months old and has done around 3800 kms. Its a Polo Tdi.

I'm quite clueless about the cause of this. Any ideas?

I've heard that, in some cars when AC is in demister (blower towards the windshield), it automatically switches to fresh air. Is that the case?.

Does this happen with AC on? And When it happens where is the air directed at(Legs,Face, Windshield)?

Re: Air Recirculator intermittently switches off in Polo TDI

Standard feature in many European cars, including Mercedes' and the newly launched Volvo S60. I guess the air in most European countries is so clean, their engineers never thought someone would want "recirculation" mode to be selected permanently. Plus, it's a recommended highway driving habit to switch from recirculation -> fresh air mode every 60 - 90 minutes. Can greatly help to reduce the stuffiness from the insides of a car.

However, I'm not sure if your Polo has it by design or fault.

It generally switch off when you change temperature via temp knobs. Otherwise it won't change modes. I have Polo TDI highline with me and saw same issue.
