For Tar spots especially in the lower portion of the car (below the doors) - I have seen and used Kerosene/Tarpin oil to remove paint (like plastic paints or paints used for painting household windows/grills) from our hands/palm - dip a small piece of cloth in kerosene/tarpin oil - rub it in the spots, arms for a second or two, then rub it with a dry cloth and the paint is removed.

What I am trying to say here is - if something as soft and sensitive as our skin can accept the effect of these oils for few seconds without any burning sensation or damage to our skin, then how much damage can be caused by using these things in removing Tar etc in modern, technologically advanced car paints on advanced metal sheets (metal car body parts) ?

Please note, I'm not talking about washing car using cloth dipped in kerosene, just to remove the tar marks with probably say a Johnson ear buds kind of stuff dipped in kerosene, rubbing it for few seconds in Tar spots and then cleaning that surface with a dry m/f cloth.
AvonA7,
Regarding your process of gentle treatment I have nothing to say. Kerosene, Diesel are all strong solvents. There are even lots of people using Surf to wash their cars. These are methods prevalent in our country. The easy way out. I have seen even garages giving the whole car a prewash with kerosene/diesel. The car will glitter. The solvent wash has removed all the sticky grime on it. Including making the process of removing tar easier from the paint surface. The only concern should be of yours is that it is your car and not anyone else's. These cars paint starts chalking (becoming dry). The solvents soften the clear coat or the solid paint. Any subsequent wiping will move the surface till it hardens again. Thereby losing its lustre. Spray painted cars are not to be rubbed or buffed for 30 days as the solvent has not hardened (not considering the oven painted cars).

When there are specialized bug and tar removers in the market why would you want the easy way out, considering the risk factors. This theory is well known in other countries who supply specific solvent based products which do not harm the clear for removing such stains. If it was my own car I would not want to play with it with products which effect the surface no matter how minuscule.

re: A superb Car cleaning, polishing & detailing guide

^^ Very well explained.
Adding to it: There also some good cleaner wax available (Collinite-850) which can be used to remove the tar spots, brake dust, oxidation and corrosion/rust traces safely. They in turn add protection to the clear coat after they remove this external depositions.

From my experience even Collinite-845 has limited tar spots cleaning capability.

re: A superb Car cleaning, polishing & detailing guide

Best for removing tar spots safely and with little paint damage is to use a good clay bar. There are specialized products for hard to remove bug and tar- check one out
Meguiars Gold Class Bug & Tar Remover dissolves bug remains, tar, sap, and more! Remove sticky contaminants easily with Meguiars Gold Class Bug & Tar
There are many listed - only issue is that availability in india. Specific products do not harm the paint and are made for that reason, anything else is sure to cause some damage, little or more.

@AvonA7-

C850 and C845 have totally different purpose; they don't replace eachother.
C845 -Is an insulator wax with High Carnuaba contents which provided the dept to the colour shine making it look wet. The Polymer addons in it add to the durability and gloss. Its very good for lighter colours. This should be the last coat you apply on your car during detailing.

C850 - Is a cleaner wax. It should be used before you apply any kind of wax.
Check out Liquid Metal Wax » Collinite

Quote:
Brings faded, tarnished and lightly rusted metal accessories and fittings back to life. This rejuvenating cleaner-wax saves both time and money by combining restorative and protective properties in one step. Safely removes stubborn discoloration, oxidation, and blemishes. Wipes off to reveal high luster shine and coating that guards against future rust, stains, and weathering. Contains no harsh alkali or acids. Handcrafted and poured in the USA
I don't have any experience with C850 but being it Collinite Product I can blindly say it should be a Great one too.

As I said earlier I have used C845 for removing some odd tar spots and it worked well.
I also have Meguiares Cleaner Wax and a Rain Dance Cleaner wax in my kitty and both server very good purpose of taking care of such blemishes.

If you are spcifically looking for tar removal, go with the specialised tar removal products as mkh said above.

I have someone coming from the US and I plan to get some stuff from there.

Thanks

NXT is ploymer sealent and Collinite845 is Natural Carnauba + Petroleum compounds. NXT will provide you protection + Gloss, while C845 will provide you colour depth, wet feel and gloss.

Both a very good products and can complement eachother than replace eachother.
Considering you having Tafetta White Jazz, I would say use both of them, Collinite845 should be the last to be applied.

You can checkout the Tafetta White results on my ANHC http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/test-d...ml#post2450814

Note: Its very difficult to catch the effect of light colour gloss on camera as against the dark colours. Camera doesn't make just to the pics. I have also posted some gloss reflections in this thread some pages behind.

re: A superb Car cleaning, polishing & detailing guide

My neighbor an old uncle, uses something called soap oil to wash his car. Rs 30 for 500ML. You mix this in water like car shampoo and then wash your car/Wipe down your car. Seems similar to the ONR.
After the wash his car looks shiny.
Can somebody tell me what exactly is this thing? and is it safe to be used on cars?

Hi, the car looks great and just out of showroom.

I have a white Laura on which I'm using Collinite 915 and am pretty satisfied with the results. Would you suggest topping it with a coat of 845 as well? I've never used this product and am still unclear of the situation when it has to be used in place of / instead of 915.

Also, could you suggest what the pros and cons of using Optimum Opti Seal (in case you've used the product)?

Thanks!

Ideally you should use the 845 and then apply a coat of 915 to give it the extra shine/gloss.
Waxes go over sealants. The 915 has more carnauba in it.

Collinite-915 is the best product they have with highest % of carnauba. But its more effective on dark colours as it gives wet and warm shine. Collinite claims its more durable than C845.
C845 gives better results on lighter and white colours.
Optionally you can try applying final coat with C915 over 845. I would suggest use-up your C915 and may be in next order your can order for C845.

Opti Seal is a pure paint sealent which needs to be applied as first coat after claying/wax stripping/KLASSE AIO when the paint prep is done. As I said its pure paint sealent and it gives out a high plastic feel gloss but it can never add the depth to the colour like carnauba adds. C845/915 can be use as topping layer on Opti Seal to get required depth in finish.

PS: This is what I have read about Opti Seal on various detailing forums, I don't have 1st hand experience dealing with it.

Well internet search tell me this is a mild soap cleanser ideal for wood cleaning (eg: wooden floors).

Wikipedia says
Quote:
Murphy's Oil Soap is a cleaning product marketed by Colgate-Palmolive. It is available in a concentrated liquid form which is then mixed with water, as well as pre-diluted form which comes in a trigger spray bottle. Commercials for the product state that the product is ideal for cleaning wood surfaces.
Despite the name, oil soap does not contain oil; it contains potassium soap manufactured from vegetable oil. The other constituents of Murphy's Oil Soap are sodium EDTA, propylene glycol, fragrance, surfactants, and water.
Oil soap is commonly used to clean and polish horse tack, such as bridles and saddles. The oil soap is also an excellent lubricant to use with water when throwing clay on a potter's wheel
Product Info: Cleans Hardwood Floors, Paneling, Tables, Ceramic Tiles - Original Formula | Murphy Oil Soap

I tried searching for it here in Faridabad by the name "Soap Oil" but, nobody seemed to know what it is.
I, however, found something similar to it but, it was to be used as a floor cleaner, so, I didn't buy it thinking it could be too harsh.
A member on some other forum told me that it is an equivalent to Optimum No Rinse when it comes to using it.
He said it is to be diluted in water in the same ratio as ONR and is to be used the same way. He also told me that the finish after a wash is very glossy.
According to him, it is easily available down South.
