Rear windshield broken on brand new DZire ZDi

My friend for a delivery DZire ZDi on Saturday (11-09-2011). He parked his car at home after the puja. On monday morning, he had shock of his life. The rear windshield has been shattered. I first thought that it was done by someone deliberately but after looking at the photos it does not look like it.
Another strange thing is that Maruti has agreed to replace if FOC. The delaer seem to suggest that this could be possible if there is manufacturing defect. Has anyone seen something like this? It looks very bizzare to me. Any explanation how can this happen?

I will let photos do the rest of the explanation.

ouch that must have pinched a lot to see it happen on a brand new car. Never seen such a thing happen before, also maruti replacing it FOC surely makes it sound fishy!!!

Just make sure they get all the glass shards cleaned properly and the insides are vaccumed for all leftover rubble when getting the new rear glass.

Yup agreed that i haven't seen anything like this before, its good that they are fixing it for free but do ask them how and why does this happen and post it on this thread. Other dezire owners will get benefited.

The only way it can happen if the quality of the glass is substandard or the fixing it not proper other than these i cant think of any other reason.

Maruti replacing it free of cost? Did not even put up a fight?
Something is not right here.

Even the ribbons are not off and the glass is gone. Painful.

Re: Rear windshield broken on brand new DZire ZDi

It seems to be a result of multiple "stress fractures" since glass is completely shattered. Was any stress applied inadvertently ?

Yes, it is very surprising. I can't think of anything that could have caused except bad quality. Is it possible for someone to break the glass with so much precision?

does this car have rear defogger. I recall reports of this happening with an indigo as the rear defogger malfunctioned and overheated the rear glass.

What precision? The glass looks like it has been shattered; someone breaking in.

I presume the glass broke while the car was stationary. Don't know why the dealer is offering to replace it FOC but it is a "design flaw", it definitely is a BIG deal.

Things don't add up.

IMO, someone might have intentionally or unintentionally broken the glass but this theory holds no good considering the FOC replacement.

I mean if someone has broken into the car, can he break the glass so neatly.

^^ Yes DZire ZDI does have rear defogger.

Really unfortunate for him to see his brand new car in this state. Like others mentioned make sure all glass is cleaned and interiors vacuumed thoroughly before taking delivery.

This is so bad. My mind is two-sided. I don see any damage on the body hence i don feel someone would have broken it. Even if the glass breaks it is not supposed to shatter this way. Also i dont feel this would be a manufacturing defect as the glass would have cracked when the cars are in the yard under harsh conditions for many days.
Long ago one of my friends wagonR had the same kind of situation with the front windshield broken. We later found the reason to be a dry coconut fallen from a tree. Luckily no body damage.
I even feel something is fishy about Maruti replacing the glass FOC.

Re: Rear windshield broken on brand new DZire ZDi

The glass might have developed minor crack/damage may be during transit to the showroom which might have gone un-noticed (??) or may be the dealer pretended not to know looking at the FOC replacement stuff. Tough luck friend. It would be good if you can get an explaination from the Maruti folks as to what might have caused this damage to a brand new unit.

Re: Rear windshield broken on brand new DZire ZDi

There is a known issue of Front windshield crack on Swift and a circular has been sent to all ASCs requesting to replace it free of cost.

Did Maruti identified something similar in Dzire rear windshield as well and providing free replacement?

OMG, Rear glass broken on a brand new car. Unbelievable. Design flaw? Thats what Maruti say is it? Was this then known to Maruti/dealer? Very Fishy.

Maruti agreeing to replace it FOC make the case more stronger. Did anyone not hear the glass breaking if it was being broken or broke on its own.

This is really bizarre.

Re: Rear windshield broken on brand new DZire ZDi

Just to be more clear about FOC replacement. Dealer did not agree for this upfront. My friend was very adamant about this and finally dealer sent the photographs to Maruti. This seems to have been approved.
