Acceleration Issues in my 2005 Mercedes E200K

Hi,

I have a 2005 mercedes benz E200K with about 60k miles. For about a week now, I have noticed the car sometimes has very sluggish acceleration and two times, while stopped at a red light, the car turned off. The sluggish acceleration happens around 65% of the time i drive.

Took it to the dealer who changed some air intake hoses and valves, charged me 15K, and no improvement. They now say change the crankshaft sensor which will cost 20K. I think he's just trying to fleece me.

Any ideas what this could be? I serviced the car last october and only drive 500 kms a month. Could it be the crankshaft sensor - if so can get it done outside for half the cost. Or is it just a case of cleaning fuel injectors, etc? By the way, whats the best fuel additive for cleaning?

Thx!

Take it to a dealer who has diagnostic equipment for your car.

It dont think it would be a problem with the CPS.

Taking it to a specialist, somebody who has the knowledge and equipment to be able to diagnose the problem without trial and error(very expensive in your case)

Re: Acceleration Issues in my 2005 Mercedes E200K

Well, I already took it to the authorized dealer, and it did not get me anywhere, except a hole in my wallet!!!

Thats why I thought I might get some advice from my fellow BHP'ians! So, if there are some inexpensive things I might try first - like adding a cleaner to the petrol tank, etc. and seeing if that solves the problem, I would prefer to do that rather than take it back to the dealer.

Just wanted to know what normally causes slow acceleration like this in vehicles - i.e. is it usually transmission issues, unclean fuel injection system, etc.

Thx!

While CPS could be a problem, i believe that first of all you get the entire intake manifold, supercharger & associated components decarbed, you will get your performance back. Get it done via a machine at a reputed place.
The reason i say this is that i've seen a couple of used C200k superchargers (Eaton), & they are FULL of carbon deposites.

I also think that the CPS is on it's way out. You do a fair bit of mileage on the odo.

Faced similar issues on my Camry it was a throttle body issue, a full cleaning of the throttle body might help - if not the next step is checking the throttle assembly. Happens a lot especially in heat - cool the car down and it will run fine till it gets heated again!

Re: Acceleration Issues in my 2005 Mercedes E200K

My mercedes had a problem of not accelerating quickly when the accelerator was pressed completely. Sent it to autohanger and it turned out to be a crack in the turbo pipe. They replaced the turbo pipe and then it was as good as new. Cost around 1800.

Re: Acceleration Issues in my 2005 Mercedes E200K

You will be lucky if it is just a crack in the turbo pipe. But any authorised service centre will diagnose and the fault will clearly show. There is no hide and seek with the diagnostics. I suspect could be the CPS or even your turbo has packed up! Some of these Mercs come with an electronic actuated turbo unit, and they tend to fail. Only option is to replace the complete unit as mercedes Does not sell only the electronic box on the turbo unit. I have come across a turbo unit from a E220cdi which the driver of the unit is a plastic gear actuated electronically, this gear got worn out, and the complete unit had to be changed!! So much so for the German engineering.

Ideally get the diagnostics done to figure out problem. It could be the MAF sensor giving wrong readings also

If its a CPS, then you should get the check engine light and some codes will be activated. Get all your codes checked.

The E200K should be the supercharged engine.

Did they say crankshaft position sensor or the camshaft position sensor ?
Because when your camshaft position sensor fails the timing goes retard & hence the sluggishness.

If the crankshaft position sensor is faulty your vehicle shouldn't start at the first place.

Even if its either of them they should have been able to diagnose it in your first visit itself. The scanners clearly show when any sensors goes kaput.

It can be something else too .. best thing would be to get the car diagnosed - scanned in some other dealership (you can stand besides them while its happening) get a estimate for the part that needs to be replaced & then if you feel right get it replaced outside.

Personally i dont thing it would be any carbon in the intake problem because i have seen many high miles clocked 200Kompressors here in my dealership & they never had it.

Well the usual causes for sluggish accelaration as clogged air or fuel filters, have you checked them till now? Also if sluggishness is accompained with jerks then it could also be the ignition coil, but that should give you a check engine light. I would say that get the filters checked first.
