Nokia maps have always been free, it is the turn-by-turn navigation that was a chargeable service, and quite expensive too.

However, it has just been announced that it is now free!

Tried to update my N-82 to Maps 3.0, by the way, and just get an error. The error is mentioned many times on the net, but not fixed.Depressing when software companies do that.

Thats great news.

Too bad, my N82 does not have new version of OVI (its released for only FP5 devices so far).

Downloading free version for 5230.

Hey that's good info. When did Mobile XT become free download ? When I checked long while back, it always came for $99 with US or Euro maps - or did I miss something

Garmin sells Maps for $99. In my opinion, Garmin's maps are best in terms of accuracy. But coverage is limited to road network and around 100 cities in detail.
Technically, Garmin does not make maps. They source it mainly from Navteq, and also from some others for certain regions.
In any case, all maps for India have problems with accuracy, alignment, road names, one-ways etc :-(

This is the free download link :

Garmin: Garmin Mobile XT Navigation for Smartphones Software Update Collection

Free download does not include maps.

You need to buy Navteq maps from Garmin ($100) or from Satguide (2k) to unlock the program.

Only for some phones at the moment which even excludes N97. I am hoping they support N95 in the future because I always like the navigation in Nokia Maps (older versions).

That's surprising - I had updated to Ovi Maps 3.0 on my N95 and it works fine. The map support for India has increased to 100+ MB from 10+MB. So, N82 being newer than N95 ...

you have watched two movies - I have couple of questions,

-You have to upload movies to the gps? if yes how did you load? through
usb cable provided by MMI?
-I presume while watching movie the Navigation function may not work?
-How did you get the movie sound -using a ear phone?

Please clarify -thanks

You, too, have N82!
(poetry accidental <Blush>)

What version of Maps are you running? Mine is 2.0 (IIRC I upgraded from 1.something; not sure though). When I try the upgrade to 3.0 I get the error 18 stuff that seems, from the internet, to be a commonn N82 experience.

Nokia software is dumb. Every "retry" does the whole 5.8Mb download all over again. It is so frustrating. I think they employ the programmers that Microsoft turned down!

You can either Connect to usb Cable or take out the SD card and put the Movie in SD card and put it back. They have given 2GB SD card so we can put atleast two movie in that. You can use your own SD card which dont have navigation software, and you can watch movies loaded in that SD card.

I played movie in .AVI format, which we download using torrents normally.

Sound you get in VX140 speaker or connect a 2.5 to 3.5 adapater and connect either to headphone or your Car Auxiliary-in.

Ya i think navigation function wont work while watching movie.

map version is 3. something.

Had to delete all traces of map data from memory card to resolve install errors.

Nokia seems to have woken up. Now they provide direct download of application. Just download the .sis file from nokia.com/maps.

Right now this would not work on N82 (it runs older version of OS). Free maps for this version should be released soon.

For newer phones, URL for direct app download is :

http://nds1.nokia.com/PRODUCT_METADA...0_5.0.Nocs.sis

Pain! Did you have to leave the data directory structure in place?

<An hour or so later>

Oh, this is rubbish. Worse than the worst of windows software --- and hey, a phone is supposed to be a user-friendly consumer item.

Deleted cities, so no maps. Ran Nokia Maps Updater --- same lousy 18 error message.

I doubt I'll buy another Nokia --- but I'm stuck with this one for another year or so.

Oh well... I give up. time to check out that restore...

Thanks information !
Anyway, I will be driving hence no point in trying to watch any movies.
I think this will be more useful when you travel by train or bus, otherwise we just use it for Navigation purpose only (on self drive)

I am looking at the Garmin 755T to be bought from the US. I don't need Bluetooth as I've got the Punto emotion pack with Blue&Me. It costs just about $200 on amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-755T-Portable-Navigator-Traffic/dp/B001ELJERE/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1264269407&s r=8-12

I want to know:
1. Can I use free google maps on this device?
2. If I need to choose between Satguide (2k) and MMI (7k) for Garmin maps, is paying a hefty premium for MMI worth it?
