Shanker, you can keep the antenna on the dash, or stick it via inbuilt suction cup on the windshield. No change of bodywork damage.
If you see my in car pics, you will see that the GPS is mounted on dash, and antenna is stuck to one corner of the windscreen
MY GPS has a MMCX connector. I got a Glisson antenna for 15$ when I was in US. I am told that the 12$ dealextreme units are just as good.
Before you buy check your GPS. The tiny connector is MMCX. Older models have a bigger more robus connector which is bigger, its called MCX

good that there wont be any fiddly damage to the bodywork etc from the antenna fixing.
my device is also mounted on the windshield with the suction cup system. it works very well so far. No troubles over bumps and so on. and no distortion either.
it only suffers when amidst huge highrises and in basement or mall parking lots at any level on account of all that concrete.
as of now navigating inside bangalore city and its immediate environs has been a breeze. i havent taken the vehicle outside on a long trip after buying the device. but im sure the antenna will certainly help.

Take a look at this pic bottom right corner. thats the antenna.
Its also magnetic, so some people stick it to top and then put it in after parking. This is done because some ford cars in US have "metal in the windscreen" which basically kills GPS reception.
Many other stick the antenna via suction cup to the rear window as the cable is really long.
But in your case front windscreen will be fine

External antenna will solve the problem with highrisses. Buy any cheap antenna from Dealextreme etc, these work just fine. And in case, you are not getting signal, just slap the antenna on car roof.

Cable is pretty thin and flexible, and magnet is pretty strong. Just slap it on top to front door, bring the cable in and close the door over it.

I need to do this only in extreme cases (E.g. in Manhattan, where there are 20+ story buildings on both sides of road).

Has anyone tried Naqteq's latest maps (Garmin City Navigator in NT)? How is coverage for the maps.

Earlier I had the Garmin iQue3200 that was installed in the Safari. It used to work fine till I fixed a film inside of the windscreen. Now this Llumar film was steel based and the internal antenna of the GPS started having problems getting a satellite fix. I purchased an external antenna from Garmin itself that costed me then 9k. This came with a cable. I placed the magnetic stick-on antenna on the Safari's roof and connected the cable to the GPS. Voila, instant satellite fix.

After getting the nuvi, the same external antenna works with it. Now this antenna sits on the roof of the Scorpio..:D

I am thinking of buying Garmin Nuvi 265WT. This does not support Multi-Destination Routing which allows one to add several via points between the start and end points. This allows only one via point to be added. How does one use this when one has to add more than one via point? Keep creating several start and end points with only one via point between each? So if I have to travel from A to F via B, C, D & E, then I start with A to C via B and once I reach C, create another plan from C to E via D etc. until I get to F?

First pardon, if this is a repeated question ( I think, it will be) and my knowledge on GPS stuff. With about 1400+ posts in this thread and lots of search, i really found it difficult to get an answer for my question and ended up with confusion after reading hundreds of posts.

I have Nokia 5530 XpressMusic phone. It does NOT have GPS but has Nokia Maps. I can see Maps & Location under Application menu. I think my phone has maps for few indian cities which comes by default.

Since one of my friend (another Team-BHPian) is returning from US this month end, i thought i can buy an external Bluetooth GPS Receiver which can receive GPS signals and transmit it to my phone. I heard we can get Bluetooth GPS Receivers for about $20-$25 in US.

Need help on the following questions
1) What is the good Bluetooth GPS Receiver in this price range which will work in India decently? I saw quite a few in ebay and other sites, but not sure which is good or which will work. Please suggest good brands.
2) I have downloaded and installed Mobile GoogleMaps application in my phone. Today i am able to view routes with GPRS connection. Using the external Bluetooth GPS Receiver device, will i be able to Navigate accurately?
3) Since GoogleMaps need GPRS internet connection and inturn data charges, can i use free Nokia Maps which comes with the device and navigate decently? (I mean without any data charges and no internet connection)
4) I occasionally travel to US. Will I be able to use my phone (without a US mobile service provider connection and without GPRS) and the external Bluetooth GPS Receiver device in US for navigation? Ofcourse, i understand i need to download US city maps to my phone (?).

Google maps would need a data plan to download data from internet in your case, and you would need GPRS access to be able to do so.

Lastly, if you use an Indian SIM while on roaming to USA, you'll be surprised with very very HEFTY usage charges. I am quite sure It would be more than the cost of new phone for a few minutes of usage.

You can use google maps without downloading or use OSmtracker like software for OSM maps.
But no turn by turn directions, just map and where you are information.

Hey ghpk, but i did viewed the Nokia thread before posting the questions here, as they don't answer my questions.

Oh Yea, i am not going to use Indian SIM while roaming in USA. I don't need a mobile connect, but i am wondering whether i can use my phone just as a GPS device.

Anybody else who can answer my questions, please? please:

Mine (Nokia N82) works as a GPS device even when in offline (ie flight) mode. Try it on yours. I don't see any reason why GPS should be any more dependent on the "phone" functions than, say, playing music would be.

If you walk around with your phone online for phone calls, it could cost you rather a lot in spam SMSs, wrong numbers and calls from people who may not know yu are away --- assuming that, in roaming mode, you pay for incoming calls too on your plan.
