Temperature gauge stuck at the same level. Help?

My lancer diesel's Temperature needle in dash, is showing just below half way mark, always, even when cold, i just noticed today, i think this problem cropped up only before1-2 days. Due to this the fan starts working when i on the key to start the car. What might be problem? I do not think the needle got stuck

I guess it is the coolant temperature sensor that has failed, otherwise fan will not come up when cold.

As stated above, the coolant temperature sensor has failed. So, the ECU, not having a way to know engine temps keeps the fan on all the time as a fail safe measure. Please replace the sensor ASAP.

Agree to the above.

In the ikon, if the coolant temp sensor fails, the needle will be stuck in the hottest position, and the engine will not start. Similarly, your fan turning on, is one way, the car is keeping itself safe.

there are two sensors, one near engine block, and other under the radiator, i think you people are speaking about the thermocouple in radiator. am i right?

Try disconnecting one sensor at a time, observe the temperature gauge. You can find which went wrong by this way.
