Yes if your bike sticks out of the sides of the car. I've seen bikes fastened upright vertically on top of car roofs in the US with the handle facing forward in the direction of the car (even two at a time), but never saw those type of bike racks here in India.

For the regular rear bike rack - those that dont already own bikes may want to consider models with 20" or 18" rims if its only for weekend leisure outdoors exercise, Or even folding bikes. Or maybe regular bikes with removable front wheels can fit without jutting out of the sides with front wheel inside the car.

From the information I have gleaned through this thread and from the experiences of other forum members, only in certain states there is clarity on it: GJ, DL-NCR, UK.

My friend from Bengaluru--who is a avid motorhead owns and operates a garage for car modifications (i.e. installation of Auto Clutch for stick shift cars) says empathically NO for KA.

As it has already been mentioned before, GJ seems to be lenient, as it was reported in this news report in 2018: https://Youtu.be/s16isLjYlks

Can anyone with some more information in regards to this issue please share your insights?
This question has been baking in my head for a while now - do state RTO laws supersede C.M.V act laws? So if your car is registered in a state where the RTO rules allows something and you are travelling and temporarily traversing in another state that disallows it - are you legally in the clear or can the traffic cops of the other state penalise you for violating their local RTO rules?

The state in which you are in, the laws there will be applicable.

If we look deeper, then I am sure we will understand which area covers which part. And there wont be any contradiction / overlap.
CMV will be the broader regulations,
State laws will be specific to the state - road taxes, location specific speed limits, fines, etc. Implementation of these will be by the state.

Regarding your post about cycle carriers. Having a cycle mounted at the back is also a violation. Nothing can jut out of the body (except may be the extra mirror will be overlooked). If you are in doubt, then look at the LGV's carrying extra long pipes, that are often stopped by the cops. Forget carrying stuff at the top, you cant actually be carrying cycles at the back.

Re: Questions About Roof Racks / Carriers / Bicycle Carriers

I have transported both of my bicycles from Bangalore to My home town on my Baleno. I have a bikerzrack bicycle mount. It’s a nerve wrecking 260km journey. I maintained a speed of less than 80kmph most of the time. I find the rack does tend to wobble on potholes. I have stopped multiple times and checked and tightened the hooks.

IIRC the news article I originally read clarified that Bicycle cannot jut out of the sides of a car. So it's not a summary ban.

Backside is also a side.
Front side is also a side.

Not very complicated, I hope

Actually it is... If you read the whole article

ADGP (Internal Security) Bhaskar Rao who is also an avid cyclist clarified in a tweet, “Let it be amply clear, carrying cycles on your car doesn’t attract any penalty. It is only rear and top overhang. Protrusion on either side is an offence as it is lateral overhang and will pose danger to other road users.” Another tweet by Bengaluru City police added”, (Cycle racks are) acceptable only when you use standard racks and all there by the public will not harm.”

Re: Questions About Roof Racks / Carriers / Bicycle Carriers

Western countries (especially UK & EU) are OCD about a few things to do with rear-mounted bike racks:

1. Rear lights (all, including fog lights etc.) must be clearly visible
2. Number plate must be mandatorily lit (at night) and clearly visible as well
3. Must not protrude beyond the normal widest point of the vehicle

Many regular users of such carriers invest in extensions which includes a lit number plate. Some manufacturers or specialist aftermarket outfits even make bespoke kits which include all rear lights as well.

I have no plans for such a rack, but would definitely get a registration plate (HSRP knockoff) made and tie it to the rearmost bike.

Re: Questions About Roof Racks / Carriers / Bicycle Carriers

Hi BHPians. Needed some help in getting roof rails fitted on my Ford Figo Aspire (2016). This is for usage on long drives.
I have three questions on which your response is requested:

1. Is this something I should even contemplate doing to my car?

2. If yes, what kind? (i would prefer rails over racks) Which is a good brand and type.

3. Any trusted vendor in Bangalore that can sell and fix it?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Questions About Roof Racks / Carriers / Bicycle Carriers

I explored a couple of roof carriers and narrowed down on the Goldsun series. This one https://goldsun.co.in/product/glc-40...innova-crysta/

It looks well integrated with the roof (doesnt stick out like old-style-carriers) and is available in the same color as the car.

Anyone have experience in using their carriers?

Re: Questions About Roof Racks / Carriers / Bicycle Carriers

I'm an avid cyclist and like to take my bicycle wherever and whenever I go out tation. Seeing the issues with cops, my discomfort with carrying the cycle sticking out on a bicycle rack, and the fact that I usually travel with the better half only, I got a bicycle bag and place the bicycle in it. Take off the wheels and pedals and its a tight fir. I don't remove handle bars or lower the seat and the zip almost completely closes. A small portion is left unzipped where the chain ring protrudes.

I place the cycle seat down in the bag and the bag vertically on the rear seat back, tied down with the seat belts. Cumbersome? yes, but not much more than a rear carrier and I have peace of mind with no restrictions on speed or road surface quality.

Bicycle size is small, car is i20. Bag from Amazon https://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B01...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Re: Questions About Roof Racks / Carriers / Bicycle Carriers

Completed a trip from Bangalore to Jamshedpur over this week. Around 2000kms~.
Used the Amazon Basics roof carrier bag.

Car - Ford Figo Aspire Automatic (2016)

Route - Bangalore - Vijayawada - Vishakapatnam - Gopalpur-on-Sea - Jajpur Road - Jamshedpur.

Speed - Drove up to 120kmph where permitted.

Road condition - Good roads mostly except few section in Tirupati - Vijayawada, Gopalpur-on-Sea - Jajpur Road, and Jajpur Road - Jamshedpur.

Weather - Rainy throughout.
Of 30 hours of driving 15 would be through rain (3-4 hours in mid to heavy rains)

The carrier contained our clothes and kids soft toys (Scrunched using the smart saver vaccum bags from Amazon) . Not a drop of water went in. It stayed fit on the roof throughout the journey.

How did you fit the bag on top of your car since it does not have grab rails.

Looped the straps thought the hand rails inside and closed the door on them. No door open warning and I tried opening the door after locking them to make sure they hold.

The driver side does not have a hand rail so we looped it through the B pillar.

I would recommend getting rails on roof if possible. We had to leave bangalore at a one week notice and didn't get time to get it done.

Thanks! This gives me a lot of confidence to to buy one amazon basics roof bag!

However is there someone here who owns a CelerioX and using the bag?
CelerioX has some dummy (this is what I assume) roof rails, not sure how much of it is useful. Can something (cross bars, may be?) be fitted to it to make it useful?

Refer this for CelerioX roof rail picture https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/attac...57-lakh-45.jpg
