well i responded to the poll but i thought of it as a short shifter
Well talking about gear boxes, i prefer a close ratio box with a tall 5/6th gear with a short shifter

Its not maxing out, Its more of how I drive it than limited by what the GB lets me do. Its a 1.6L. I occasionally redline only in 1 and 2 .

2. I can do 120Kmph in 2nd without redlining!

Is it modded?? Cos, i know a few modded balenos which can't cross 100kph in second.
Nitrous old pal, i have consistently redlined my esteems in 2nd gear to touch 110 without any mods (both my esteems in question were the carb versions). Did someone say modded mpfi esteem & baleno ?? get into the club mahendra.

How about tall on the first three and shorter (still lower ratio-wise than the third) on the 4th and 5th. You could drive on the first three in the city and then onthe highways you can still have effective pulling power from cruising speeds.

Lost performance right, you cant go super quick to 4th & 5th through 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Overtaking a pain since you keep coming down to 3rd to overtake.

Whatever the ratio be its terrible to be in an 'adventure s' 4th gear, absolutely flat from 60 kmph onwards.

I am still not able to figure out the short-tall gear funda. Do you support the following:

Tall gearing means that we don't need to shift gears frequently in city traffic, the engine would not beg for mercy even at higher rpms at say 2nd & 3rd gears. So if the car crosses 100km in 2nd gear, does it imply tall gearing.

If someone could give an explanation comparing two cars, (e.g.) esteem (vs) zen, it would be enlightening.

@Mr Bean: A short gear is one with a low gear ratio, and a tall gear is one with a high gear ratio. For example, a 3.267:1 gear is shorter than a 1.147:1 gear. A gear ratio of 3.267:1 means that the driveshaft rotates one time for every 3.267 rotations of the engine.
Ideally the gear ratios should be set up to use the full potential of the engine in each gear. A shorter final gear will allow the use of the highest gear at lower speeds. The opposite issue is reaching the RPM limit in the highest gear. A taller final gear will thus enable more high speed.
My car has a close ratio transmission with the following ratios:
1st: 3.267
2nd: 2.130
3rd: 1.517
4th: 1.147
5th: 0.921
6th: 0.659
Reverse: 3.583
Final Drive: 4.76
This means while cruising in 6th the engine is purring, while at the lights once I am past 1st, I can put up some stiff competition!
