Is there any particular reason why the music system goes off when the ignition key is turned to start the car? (I am guessing that this is a common feature in all cars?) Is it done to ensure that the full power goes to the starter mortor. But then it is not connected to the headlights. So my interpretation could be wrong. I have a feeling that there is a simple answer to this but it is eluding me...

when ever you crank your motor, the starter takes away the juice from the battery. So you have a low voltage and high current in the circuit. To save your costly music system, it is disconnected from the supply lines. This is property of all good music systems. You may have noticed that the bulb go dim when you use the starter. Try using an el cheapo FM kit in your car and I bet it will not go out when you use the starter. Cause it does not have the protecting circuit.
