I think legal/ liability issues prevent the unexpected shutting off of engines while on the move. Even thieves have right to life!

My car has alarm with the remote locking. The siren was also perfect when my dad came back and unlocked the car. Still trying to figure out the what might have happened.

Re: Why your "remote locking" immobilizer is useless

Found this programmable remote key for Figo

http://flipkeys.in/product/ford-figo...-spare-remote/

The link also talks about how remote can learn the lock/unlock codes. Since figo is fitted with immobilizer with PATS, wonder how (and if) this learning mechanism is going to work?

OR

We put car in learning mode and add new codes generated by this new set of keys in addition to existing remote key?

Any one has tried or any idea about this self learning remote ? Kindly enlighten

Modded 2020 Fortuner hacked and stolen from Delhi without alarms. (request help)

Another Fortuner stolen, this time it's the new model Fortuner.

In the age of Immobilizers and siren locks, how could a thief enter and drive it away just like that without any alarms going off? very strange!

A modded Toyota Fortuner was ‘hacked’ and stolen without blinkers or horn or other alarm noises according to the video here.

Unfortunate and shocking! Wonder if his key was spoofed at some unsuspecting destination.

Old article but describes the modus operandi well.

RollJam, as Kamkar describes it, is meant to be hidden on or near a target vehicle or garage, where it lies in wait for an unsuspecting victim to use his or her key fob within radio range. The victim will notice only that his or her key fob doesn't work on the first try. But after a second, successful button press locks or unlocks a car or garage door, the RollJam attacker can return at any time to retrieve the device, press a small button on it, and replay an intercepted code from the victim's fob to open that car or garage again at will
As vehicles become more electronic in nature, the tools of the thieves are also changing. Wonder if a physical and visible safety device would have saved the day for this car. Gear lock, steering lock, maybe even a wheel clamp?

With Key spoofing becoming common for thieves to steal cars these days, isn't it the responsibility of OEMs to provide much more safer measures in order for the cars to be secure?

Even if the remote spoofing is done for opening the car doors, how on earth could they start the vehicle which has an immobilizer and a physical sensor which is present and coded in the OEM keys? Even the key maker needs an original key to copy the code to make a duplicate key. How did these guys bypass immobilizer? Looks like these guys are inspired from Gone in 60 seconds movie.

My uncle lost his Honda Brio in 2012 in Delhi, till date there's no response from cops about the missing vehicle. He got his insurance claim though. As the owner of this fortuner said in the video, most of them would end up in tier 2 cities or towns and they might sell them to unsuspecting customers or use them as parts cars for accident vehicles. It's high time car manufacturers should come up with better security features.

I guess that's the easy part. Like you said, all they need is physical access to the key and the car.

There can be a lot of places where this is easily accomplished - valet/parking attendants, any accessory shop, even service centers or their pickup/drop service.

Manufacturers will always be one step behind when it comes to providing a safe solution. It's best to have some safeguards of our own too, considering the amount spent on the vehicle.

Re: Modded 2020 Fortuner hacked and stolen from Delhi without alarms. (request help)

Perhaps the start sequence key/switches like Transporter/Mad max fury road are the solution. As mentioned earlier there are just too many places where physical access to a key can be obtained without the owner never knowing it.

Set your own sequence, change as frequently as desired and frustrate the wannabe thieves. Perhaps make it a bit advanced to take pic and email to owner when the sensor is tripped due to wrong sequence. That should definitely help the authorities nab the culprit.

Looks like there's a cheaper alternative to secure your car and this is a DIY, no one would know where you installed your kill switch.

Even if the service center guys or valet parking guys make a duplicate key with same Sensor code, they cannot turn on the engine without turning on the kill switch which can be hidden at any safe location in the car.

Well I haven't tried breaking through any of them, so don't take my word for it

But the idea is to present a visual deterrent. Even if they are able to break through all 3 of these in 15 mins, it would mean they will have to spend that extra time on the spot. More time, more exposure and more risk. If they find another car where they don't need to spend the extra 15 mins they would probably attack that instead.

Re: Why your "remote locking" immobilizer is useless

Nowadays, they're selling special pouches for your keys to go in, which apparently prevents spoofing. But you do have to take 'em out to unlock your car, making them not of much use.

I had got a gear lock installed in my Hector right after delivery. Even the showroom owners were amused. Apparently no one really gets one nowadays, not in 'modern cars'.
