From my experience, pushrod engines are really bad. In fact, they're so bad they're WICKED

@steeroid : How does a "modern" pushrod like the LS1 "feel" as compared to say..your Mondeo?

The Mondeo isnt fair comparison, because it is dust (not even dust, come to think of it) in front of the LS1.

The Mondeo has sweet spots and stuff - you get it in the right slot and it can move. The LS1 has no sweet spots - its a whole sweet band of power.

Crush the gas pedal at any RPM and it takes off with a growl. Other 'modern' engines that I have had opportunity to use like the E240 and the Accord V6 are no comparison either.

This engine makes you grin from ear to ear. Wait till I get a performance cam and valvetrain into that block....modifying this engine seems so damn easy and cheap - plenty of performance mods available at a song.

And the LS1 can be capable of developing 400bhp, as in the case of C5 Z06 and the Cadillac CTS-V. That makes a specific output of 70hp/litre, pretty good for a pushrod car.
A bit off topic here, but GM should have stuck with the DOHC Corvette, as in the ZR-1.
