I tend to buy spares before landing there or any fng, especially when it comes to oil, filters etc.

And then other than that only for tinkering and painting where the rate is known in advance.

Looking for a reliable FNG in Adyar area is always a hit and miss business. Speed Bhai is good for tinkering and other small work as Hserus says. That is the reason why I still go to Concorde in ECR for even my routine service. They may charge a bit more, but for Tata cars, they know the job like the back of their hand.

After again catching up for 2 weeks and some 'final dates' later, Bhai refunded all of those 3600/-, in person at my residence. Bhpian hserus had notified him of my post here and that got him thinking I guess. While I thought of even letting go of the money, some of the Chennai bhpians who are in touch asked / inspired me to keep at it - Thanks guys, appreciate your support too.

I am glad its sorted out for you. I will continue to use his services because he's genuinely good as a mechanic but I seriously doubt I'm going to give him any sort of advance for parts procurement now or in the future. GP Road is a short distance away in any case.

Googling Speed Motors leads to this thread on the first page itself. Just a suggestion; even a negative thread is of immense use; for e.g. @swiftfurious, @madmaxvistian and @scopriobharath's experiences made it very clear for me to avoid him, and instead went to another for my Vento. On the other hand, he's got 50+ 5 star rating on Google reviews and similar on Justdial.

Once you receive the responses, if the situation remains as it is now, my suggestion would be to lock the thread with a final note so other bhpians (and visitors) are aware of the dual situation.

This is the same with any sort of fng I am afraid .. judging by the quality of work and the low costs he manages when dealerships try to charge the earth, he can be used.

Financial dealings need to be watched like a hawk of course. Feel free to move the thread or edit the first post to say that he does good work but be precise when working out advances.

I don't think it's right to generalise all FNGs to be like speed motors. There are properly equipped, experienced, honest, accountable and affordable garages out there.

I don't think a mechanic/workshop no matter how good his work is, is worth it if I need to watch my finances with him. It means he is not honest about what work he's doing or the parts he's buying. I'd rather spend a little bit more for peace of mind, than worry about whether I'm being cheated or shortchanged. Just seems like an added headache to me.

This could just be me, but I would avoid a garage where I need to pay an advance for parts/work.


Lastly, I'm sorry but I don't understand what is so special about speed motors for it to be on the directory. These kind of mechanics are dime-a-dozen. I think we should reserve this section for specialists or a workshop which really proves it's worth without an ounce of doubt. Neither of which I believe describes speed motors.

Agreed, These sort of despicable tactics aren't every FNGs' forte. I know a mechanic in Chennai who doesn't take payments from known customers even after the repair is done and gets it whenever he needs. Once, I had to run behind him to give the money which I owed him. Such is the relationship and trust which we share. I believe that certain FNGs have their own set of ethics and values which they honour and believe that will give them more business in the coming years.
