can any one tell me what is an engine torque damper do and what are its benifits on indian roads and have any one of you installed one

No idea watz this.

Would be great if someone explains...

its a kind of shock absorber for the engine

An engine torque damper is a shock which is mounted on the brackets between the engine and the chassis.

This helps reduce engine vibrations affecting the chassis, resulting in smoother and efficient acceleration.

If you've ever sat in an old car, you'l notice the car vibrating even when the engine idles. Torque dampers dampen these vibrations and make the car feel smoother.

Not sure if the cars of today really need it, as they're already pretty smooth and vibration free.

Shan2nu

Engine Torque Vibration Dampers are fixed at the pulley end of the crankhaft. Like Shan2nu mentioned, these are used to abosrb the vibration from the engine and overall better the NVH levels of the vehicle. There are primarily two types - rubber and viscous types. Most cars use rubber dampers. The V6/V8 powered cars and larger vehicles like trucks and off highway vehicles use viscous dampers.

Not all cars use dampers. Smaller gasoline cars (below 1.3 ltrs) make do with a thicker pulley design. With engine sizes on the rise in the Indian market, you would see more vehicles coming with dampers.

One of the key changes which the Indica V2 had over the older Indica was the revised damper design.

@joz: Actually, you're talking about the engine mounts. The mounts come as hydraulic or static (rubber), depending upon the NVH.

The Torque damper is a shock-absorber, like Shan2nu said (like the ones used in the tailgates of Omni, Wagon-R, etc.) and one mount is mounted on the Chassis (usually somewhere around struts) and one ON the engine.

The actual purpose of the Torque Damper is to reduce engine hop due to torque loads, on the mounts. It's more useful in race applications where high-powered engines produce a lot of counter-movement resulting in harshness. The vibrations also affect shifting and power delivery, to some extent. Hence the use of torque dampers.
