unlike petrols, 2 stroke diesels are actually more efficient- the earlier marine engines comprised of two stroke diesels, mostly..... in fact, 2 stroke diesel engines still hold the record for the highest thermal efficiency. but the point to be noted though, is that even though 2 stroke marine diesels were the most efficient in the planet till date, they don't sport good specific outputs; a methanol fuelled dragster can produce the same horsepower in just about 8000 odd cc- but if you look at the torque figures, you'll see where the difference lies.....

Advice : Never brag to a Marine Engineer about the size of your diesel engine - they don't care ;-)

My dad's a marine engineer - the most powerful engine he's worked on are 49860 hp B&W diesels on 50,000 ton (Gross Tonnage)container ships. Surprisingly many small container ships may have much more powerful engines as compared to bulk carriers many times their size as they have much higher cruising speeds.

true, but maybe the torque of the engines of the large capacity freight carriers with a payload capacity or gross tonnage of more than 200 kt (kilo-ton), are more- which is why they are able to carry higher loads, but can't attain higher speeds....

i've heard of a freight carrier that could cruise upto (an unbelievable) 40 Knots/ nautical miles per hour(or 73 km/h, approx.)...!!!! dunno the exact details, but will try to dig up some- heard this from my uncle, who works in merchant navy.....

another query... with a piston stroke that long, at 103rpm arent you exceeding 20m/s piston speed making the engine unstable?
