Hi BHPians,
Thought of starting this thread on diesel engines.
We would have heard of various kinds of diesel engines used in automobiles (let us constrain to road ones and not go to locos).
Few of them I have heard are:
1. Normal compression diesel engine -- Fuel and air mixture is compressed and due to compression ignition takes place.
2. CRDi (hyundai)
3. CRDe (mahindra)
4. DICOR (Tata)
Do we have any more nomenclatures like this? Can somebody list as well as explain the differences between them? Links also cool.

Also please specify the best diesel engines available and the vehicles they are mounted on. Could be in India (good for me as I plan to buy) as well as abroad.

Cheers,
4x4

CRDI,CRDE,DICOR,TDCI.....they are all the names for common rail direct injection engine, the difference in the names is just due to the trademark laws.most common rail diesel mills are superb engines there are a few exceptions like 3.0 DICOR engine used in tata safari.

As said by anshuman, it is just the way you label it.

Basically, in older cars used the indirect method of injection. These ones had low power and torque characteristics. The main reason for indirect injcection was the difficulties in scaling down the injection system of big diesel engines to smaller one due high speed and small compression volume. With introdution of common rail, the precise control of injection system at high pressure was possible and hence the common rail direct injection becoming popular. Companies started using different nomenclature to diffrentiate their products from others.
