Guys I just wanted to know about the gear ratios what do they actually mean?

This site should help you understand the concept.

How gears work.......

Play Colin McRae Rally 2.0 (or 3 or 04 or 2005) and go into the car setup prior to the race. You can adjust gear ratios for either faster acceleration but a slightly lower top speed, or maximum top speed but slightly slower acceleration. Get a feel of the car with both setups and you'll know what gear ratios are!

In simple, a transmission is a component of a vehicle, rather the drive train, that alters the speed between the engine rpm and the wheel rpm.

This helps achieve max power at diff wheel speeds helping the car accelerate faster and have a higher top speed in the process.

A car with a direct link would end up having just one gear ratio, 1:1. That would be similar to driving a car in 4th gear (or any gear with a ratio close to 1:1), all day long.

Also there is the differential, which has a constant reduction ratio, unlike the ratio(gear) you choose in the transmision.

R

as far as gear ratios go

who in bombay would help me get gear ratios changed as per my driving needs

That would be a highly expensive and labor intense job. Not to mention the knowledge required. If the job goes wrong for some reason, it could ruin the whole driveability of the car.

Just a small point if the car happens to be a maruti of the Zen, Esteem or 1000 variety then the gears can be interchanged for your needs between these 3 cars.

As for other cars you are right very few people can cut the gears precisely for your needs.

The key gear that Rehaan mentioned is the final drive which can alter the complete performance of the car.
