Forget dual-clutch, Honda patents triple-clutch gearbox!

Honda has patented a new 11-speed triple clutch gearbox in Japan. The patent was filed in the month of May. The third clutch will be used to decrease the loss of torque while shifting gears, which is a characteristic of dual-clutch transmissions. Moreover, it is expected to make the engine more efficient, reduce shift times.

Since the technology has just been patented, there is very little chance of it making to production in the immediate future. However, media reports suggest that since the gearbox has been designed while keeping in mind fuel efficiency, the company might eventually use it in its range of small cars. Currently, most of Honda's small cars are equipped with a single-speed continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Currently, Ford and Chevrolet boast of having the most gears with their 10-speed gearbox. This gearbox will be found in the Ford F150 and Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 that are expected to go on sale next year. Ford is also reported to be working on an 11-speed gearbox.

Finally the Fast and Furious franchise will be able to justify all that gear changing action in their movies (whenever this goes into production)!

Nice innovation but at least Honda should incorporate dual clutch transmission in its current cars. Cvt, though it's smooth, it's not at all to an enthusiast's taste because of the rubberband effect.

This is what is expected from Honda. Bravo! I also don't expect this gearbox to have reliability issues like the VW DSG. Honda is synonymous with reliability.

I hope the gearbox does not have manual mode or paddle shifters; can't imagine changing 11 gears manually

True. Honda & Toyota have both fallen behind the Europeans in terms of technology. No dual-clutch gearboxes in volume cars, no direct-injection turbo-petrols and based on the news so far, they've yet to catch up on autonomous / self-driving tech.

In the last decade, the Japs have poured billions of Yen into developing alternative fueled cars (electric, hydrogen fuel cells etc) and stupid R2D2-like robots though
