when do we change gear

hi,
this thread is about when do we change gear, please everyone share your driving techniques...

Petrol : in case of a petrol engine i tend to change the gear around 5500 or 6000 rpm , i don't want to rev it to the max as shifting earlier can give a better economy....

Diesel : in case of a diesel engine i shift it a little late because i feel the torque falls off soon experienced it with force cruiser , bolero camper and all

so in case of drag when do you shift ...till the rpm redlines ???
also please type about the different situations where different gera changing techniques are employed...
