Is it the effect of K&N Filter or am I driving well?

Well... few months back, I bought an Alto and below are the fuel log and mileage details.

Log Sheet

NGEF Fuel Station - 1st Tank - IOC Extra Premium - 30 Ltrs - 450 KMS
NGEF Fuel Station - 2nd Tank - ICO Extra Premium - 30 Ltrs - 450 KMS

1st Sevice (Bimal)

Airport road BP Fuel Station - 3rd Tank - BP Speed - 30 Ltrs - 482 KMS
Airport road BP Fuel Station - 4th Tank - BP Speed - 30 Ltrs - 480 KMS

Old Madras road shell Fuel Station - 5th Tank - Shell Super - 30 Ltrs - 514 Kms
Old Madras road shell Fuel Station - 6th Tank - Shell Super - 30 Ltrs - 568 Kms (Half way down the tank I put K&N Stock replacement Filter)

Near ITPL Shell Fuel Station - 7th Tank - Shell Super - 30 Ltrs (Quarter tank to go I have driven 500 KMS)

Typically, I top up the tank and drive till the fuel needle touches the red mark and most of the time I end up refilling around 30 Ltrs to top up again. The driving is in Bangalore city and I have not gone for a long drive.

What is the reason behind good FE of this Run?

1. First service
2. Fuel Change
3. K&N Filter
4. My Driving skills
5. Fuel Station

PS: I was a newbie to driving when I took my car.

Wow that much mileage. Man my car struggles to touch 400kms and that too i fill in 32 litres or so. Mine is a year old and 6000Kms on the odo.
But this is on hosur road traffic and since the cars underpowered i do push it thorugh it's gears.
But never the less i think i should get the car checked up. I fill at lavelle road shell pump only.

my alto gives me rougly 21 kmpl during highway runs & 19 kmpl on city ! which roughly turns out to be 19 x 32 = 608 kms on a full tank & its about 11 months back i got mine ! i dont use any special fuel & the car has logged 20000 kms till date ! what do you think !

What else to think other than saying 'Good Mileage'. There are people who have got 21 Kmpl in City and 24-25 on highway.

I was pondering on what factors are contributing to my run...

Welll dsinz, that sure is amazing FE. Replacing the filter with the K&N filter - doesn't that void warranty? Is there a specific model that you used for your Alto?

I am thinking of going for K&N in my WagonR (6 months old). I am getting 14.4 kmpl (city-suburb conditions). Is there any specific model that you guys would recommend? Again, will it void my warranty?

1) One thing from my experience…
Fill from Shell only... Atleast 10% increase in the mileage your vehicle will give compared to other pumps (I’m talking about petrol, Shell diesel gives less mileage anyway)…
Other pumps manipulate on quantity and quality.
You may not believe the mileage my bullet gives with Shell petrol...

2) Why you guys calculate the mileage systematically. For bikes it is easy to calculate the same taking one reserve to the next reserve km and the no of liters filled.
For cars: Top up the tank, set the trip meter to zero, run for any no. of km, top up the tank (say you filled 'X' ltr. to top up this time and 'Y' the km reading on the trip meter)… Now the mileage is 'Y' divided by 'X', which will be the presence mileage of your car.

@JOHY: Stock replacement filter does not void warranty. I did speak to the show room people and they said no issues and also they have the K&N cleaning kit.

It is a common filter for 800/Alto and Wagon R. That is what is written on the box. Exact number I do not know now.

I guess the change in fuel & the K&N together have contributed to your higher mileage, that is presuming that you have not made any changes in your driving style & that you have been driving in the same kind of traffic all the while. New drivers tend to drive fuel efficiently than the seasoned ones. i floor the accelerator till the rpm touches 3000 & then shift, so you can imagine what mileage i will get.

Saarji, you don't really enjoy flooring the Altos and the WagonRs - but the Esteems and the Balenos - ahem! New driver or not!

Wow this is terrific mileage with an Alto ... I too own an Alto (around 11 months old) it gives only 14-15 kmpl in city driving.

I have a Santro (6 months old) too which gives 19-20 Kmpl in approximately the same conditions... I use IOC premium for both ....

Any guesses what might be the reason?

19-20 from a santro? never heard that before! u sure ur not making some calculation errors? and what's your driving style? with the FE you've quoted, u must be in 5th by the time u hit 60
seriously though, can u verify those figures?

i have recently upgraded my ecu to sports ecu for a better pickup on my alto as the acceleration of this car is very much flawed !
