Charging system warning light & leakage? EDIT: Alternator belt snapped off

Hello,

My 3.5 years Xcent is has done 20k kms and has been trouble free all through.

This evening, the car showed some strange symptoms.

1. On starting the car, i noticed that battery sign (vehicle charging system) warning is ON.

2. Drove it to a short distance and i could hear something like a "Kat-Khat" sound coming from somewhere (most probably engine bay) as if some nut or bold is stuck at somewhere.

3. On parking the car i could see liquid leaking from Front Right side of the car.

Please see the pics attached, and suggest next steps and what could be wrong here?

Exactly same thing happened to my Uncle's WagonR 2 days back. The culprit has been diagnosed as a cracked drainage bolt as per the mechanics which I doubt. His car had half engine rebuilt about 3 months back, car has done 2K kms after that. Isaue would have been since then I guess.
I hope you would have checked the oil dipstick. What does it show? Has oil leaked out? If yes then sound could be from some damage to the engine. Please get it checked ASAP after getting it towed to service center.

Update:

Checked the engine bay and attached is the dipstick photo. I don't think it has spilled over but not sure.

However the liquid that is being leaked seem to be coming from one of a round/cylindrical outlet on the left side of the engine bay. Please see the attached pic:

Is it me or your water pump, alternator belt is missing? Seems like it has snapped off. I would suggest you call service guys to come home and attend to it. Do not start or drive the car anymore.

I second Jaggu's opinion. The moment I read your query, a snapped belt is what came to my mind. Don't drive the car without the water pump belt. Plus you will also drain the battery that way as the same belt drives the alternator too. Best is to get the belt replaced at the spot where your car is parked. The sound that you heard was probably of the snapped belt stuck into other moving parts/ belts before finally falling somewhere on road.

Regards,
Saket.

Got the car towed on a flatbed to nearest Hyundai service station.

Yes, alternator belt and pulley has snapped off. :(

I did not have any impact or any under body hit. It was just normal driving and suddenly this. Can't see any reason whatsoever.

Actually, yes, belt snapping so early in its life is unusual. Either a manufacturing defect in the belt or some issue in the pulley may have contributed to this. I am sure the ASC will check the pulley surface and bearings/ alignment trajectory of the pulleys.

The alt belt is snapped but the pulley and the alternator itself looks intact. It seems the AC Compressor has taken some damage?

I guess your car has EPS so there is no power steering pump.

Sorry to hear this, do keep us posted as to what was the diagnosis and damage. Hope it is minor and maybe covered under warranty.

The 'kat-khat' noise you heard is of the alternator belt in its death throes, flapping about.

Eyeball the engine compartment carefully to make sure that the flailing belt has not damaged or taken out something else. Esp. wiring, hoses and other belts.

Any updates to this, did you find out what really happened that caused the belt to snap? What was the damage and what repairs had to be carried out?

Looks like some design flaw - http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/techni...undai-i20.html

Such things shouldn't be breaking / falling off.
