Hi,

I got my Swift VXI, today from Sagar Automobile. I drove around 50Kms.
Here are some of my doubts, appreciate if any one address the same.

1. The engine noise is easily noticeable, even when the car is idle. Looks
to be on the higher side. Is it normal in Swift?

2. The service manager informed me that, there is no running-in period
for the swift, like Indica or others. He said I can take it up 100+, even
during first 1000 KMs. Any inputs on this is appreciated.

3. During gear change, the clutch looks to be too soft. Previously I had
driven my Indica for more than 6 years. Also, the clutch engagement
was not so re-assuring.

Did you hear the engine noise within the cabin?. If not, then it should be normal. However, have it checked by the dealer.

Regarding running-in, it is good to be cautious and hence don't go beyond 80+ during the first 1000 km.

Yes, it was with in the cabin. Felt it was more than the 4 TD cars, which tried from different dealers.

Okay, first 1000+ kms, I will drive with in 3000 RPM or less than 80Kms.

yes you should be bit cautious in first 1500 kms after all its your car. you will definately feel lot smoother operations and feel compared to indica. If you feel noise in cabin you must get it checked from your dealer workshop.

I bought a swift Zxi in July and it also had some amount of engine noise when new. But now after having done 10000 kms the noise has gone down almost to nil and can hardly make out when the engine is idling. Wait for about 5000 kms and if this sound does not decrease then there is something wrong. Also on the first service ensure that the change the engine oil with a mineral oil and not a synthetic oil.

Regarding running in you can drive at any speed and any RPM provided you dont do that for too long. It is always advisable to have your car running at different RPM's so that the engine sets in for all speeds. The simplest way of doing this is to drive the vehicle in a city for the first 1500 kms and not take it out on to the highway.

1. The Swift's engine is very silent; sounds being noticable only at higher speeds.

2. He's just trying to earn brownie points. While most modern vehicles incl bikes dont claim any run-in period, its still very sound practice to ensure engine durability.

3. The clutch is not soft. Since you come from from an Indica which has a hard clutch, hence the feeling. Except the reverse gear, no other engagement issues exist

So, does this mean one can do 6500 rpm during running in??

Yes but not for too long. And like I said preferably drive it in the city. And if in Bangalore one can drive at 6500 rpm for long then all the best. Also the Swift manual states for running in dont drive at any constant RPM for too long. It does not say anything about limiting RPM.

Thanks for the suggestions, based on the inputs, I do take care of the running in requirements. On engine noise side, I will wait for atleast another one week, which is around 400Kms of running and then get back to dealer, if there is any further noise.

If the dealer is not responsive, write to Maruti and I am sure, your problems will be attended to.
