Student Projects @ Auto Expo 2018

Tucked away in a corner were stalls that had very less visitors but showcased buggies/formula cars built with raw passion and desire to do something extra ordinary with limited resources.

These were stalls of colleges with automotive teams of various colleges who have build BAJA/formula spec cars and successfully taken part in various competitions. SIAM had given them space in Auto Expo to showcase their talent, cars and their passion. It was a very nice experience to see these students at the Auto Expo displaying their cars and explaining with raw passion about their college/team/car to the few visitors who ventured to that part of the halls.

A good pattern I noticed in each of the college team was that they had students form various disciplines in the team and also from different years. That allowed knowledge continuity and bringing of insights/ideas/perspectives from different dimensions.

Re: Student Projects @ Auto Expo 2018

University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun had a BAJA spec buggy in which they had won several awards.

The students mentioned that the buggy had come directly to auto expo from a competition and hence was not clean. I personally liked it the way it was! The seat was a suspended hammock style one and did not touch the body/frame at the seating position. That meant, less vibrations for the driver while driving!

The spec sheet of the UPES BAJA buggy: All teams get the same engine and the rest they need to build as per their needs

Rear view of the buggy. The cutting brakes were nice on this one (just below the steering). For the disc, they had used honda activa braking system and used the spare port on that disc to route the cutting brake hydraulics -- so one disc & one caliper being used for 2 different braking systems.
Off-roaders could learn a trick here -- they have been using two calipers on the disc (one master & one for cutting brakes)

Re: Student Projects @ Auto Expo 2018

IIT Mumbai had a bigger & a much more professionally done up stall.

The various posters at the stall clearly brought out the expertise & the rich heritage of IIT-B and the support they get from TATA Motors. Notice the posters and the clear deep focus on various Mechanical & Electrical aspects of their car

AMU had their formula student car displayed which they took part in Silverstone, where 4 students teams from India were selected and they were among one of them. They mentioned that they were the first among Indian teams at Silverstone.

Thank You so much for this thread - means a lot more than the millions spent just for the Expo by the behemoths.

Had run into them at the APS 2017. Their car on display is the Orca, which is a masterpiece. We even have a dedicated thread on this car that can do 0-100 km/h in 3.4 secs - (related thread)

Re: Student Projects @ Auto Expo 2018

Thanks for sharing!

Being a Baja alumni, I was instantly attracted to these stalls the moment I saw them. Interacted with the Baja team about the competitions and the problems faced. My roommates were part of the Formula Student team, so interacting with the other teams was great too.

As said by someone earlier, these projects and teams showcasing their creations mean a lot more than large OEMs with all the resources in the world, at least to me personally. These students are extremely talented and clearly have an edge over their peers.

Great to see this community being showcased at the Expo.

Cheers

The posters that you see are normally used during the Business Presentation, Design Presentation and Cost Presentation events to help the corresponding judges understand the engineering decisions taken and the validations for it.
It helps the team showcase the car in a much more detailed manner (plus colorful pics).

Re: Student Projects @ Auto Expo 2018

Good to see the enthusiastic youngsters coming up with these projects, it is not easy to make a final working model with the limited resources they have.
Reminds me of the days of my high school where I struggled to make my own remote controlled battery operated toy car!
These kind of activities should be encouraged more by every institution.

Nice to see these vehicles here. Those who worked on these project knows how many sleepless nights had to be put to make this.

::I was fortunate to participate in Baja SAE 2012 and Formula student UK 2013 (The only team till date from Kerala) at Silverstone UK as a part of Team Unwired of NITC(Also was the team driver).
