Ikon Rocam engine-Insides revealed (with animation)!

Hey everyone,

I was looking up info on the Ford Zetec-Rocam engine that is used in our Indian Ikons (1.6, and 1.3 to some extent) and found this excellent youtube video that shows the engine, it's insides and animation of operation!

Preview:

FYI - I was looking for info on the Rocam engine's configuration, i.e. cylinder head shape, cross-flow design, valve placement etc. since I was planning on getting some cylinder head work done on it.
Imagine my joy when I stumbled upon this video! Now I not only know the exact config. of the cylinder head, I also know what shape gasket I'll need and how many bolts, etc are required for replacement!

Beyond that, this vid is a great overview on the general working of a car engine, since the Rocam is a very basic, straight-4 engine with EFI. It was originally built by Ford of Brazil to make a cheaper version of the Zetec-Sigma engines used in early generation Fiestas. It is an 8 valve, 1600cc engine with a roller-finger camshaft config (thus the name, Rocam). The original Zetec-S engines are 16 valve configurations.

(some info paraphrased from Wikipedia)

and one of a Duratec 16v....

Hey again! Well it wasn't too hard to find the Duratec 4 cyl, 16v engine vid, here it is:

I'm almost sure this is the engine used on the Mondeo here....or do we use the V6 here?! (naaah....)

Dan - thanks for the interest! The schedule is as follows: free flow headers this month, cylinder head work (mainly polishing and grooving) in Feb, and who knows what after that! (most likely, it will be a proper, full-on porting job unless I go for upgraded ICE first)

Shaz - the free-flow headers, polishing and grooving head work will be at RAC. (grooving done with help and advice from Mr. Somender Singh in Mysore)

For a later, proper porting job, I'm thinking of approaching Psycho if he believes it to be feasible.

Excellent video, very nicely explains the engine's functioning and how every component in it works. Very informative indeed.

I noticed that the header design is different from what we get here in the Indian Ikon. Any specific reason?

Did you pick up any of these manuals? What I want to know is that, is the fiesta manual available here good for the indian Ikon? Cause the ikon is infact fiesta(Europe) sedan.

i downloaded something off the internet (through) torrent. the problem is that i have win xp and it seems to want 98! i'll have to figure out what to do! it's a big file - 4.8GB too. from what i know the UK fiesta mk5 is the same as the ikon rocam in india.

It a waste of money opening up the head twice to do polishing. I would suggest you do it for once and for all instead of opening up twice. Gaskets are costly and add labour and time to that.

agreed. that's what i've been finding out. RAC tentatively quoted me something like 8k just to change the head gasket!
