What happens when you Press the Start-Stop button in a moving Car [Video]

Most of the modern cars come with a push-button start-stop feature built in them.
However, many of you might have a query about what would happen if the ignition switch is pressed while the car is being driven on the road.

DISCLAIMER
Before discussing further, let us tell you that this should not be imitated or copied in any way. It is not good for your vehicle and the aim of this post is to raise awareness rather than promote any sort of antics. It can also result in casualties if done carelessly.

Quote:

Upon pressing the button, nothing happens but a warning pops on the MID that reads “push and hold the button for an emergency stop” with three warning beeps. This is actually a manual override system built in the vehicle which prevents engine kill if the button is pressed by mistake. If the driver wants to stop the car, he must push and hold the button for about three seconds. Doing this will lead to the engine being shut down.

All modern cars come with electric or hydraulic power-steering. and stopping the engine causes the steering to become heavy. Even the brakes of modern cars are engine assisted and stopping the engine causes them to lose their efficiency. Therefore, it is extremely important that one uses extreme caution while stopping a vehicle when it is still in motion. After the engine is shut off, there is a prolonged beep sound along with the MID displaying a message which reads “Shift to neutral to restart the engine”. Upon doing the same, the engine gets back to life and the car continues to behave normally.

Toyota Innova Crysta [Video]
The video shows the different scenarios in which this could be done.
The car ignition button is pressed for long while the car is doing about 80 km/h. This leads to the engine being shut off with the car still in motion. The steering gets tight and so do the brakes, which get less responsive.

The ignition switch system could function a bit differently in different cars. Automatic and manual cars too have bit different start-stop systems. However, the basic functioning is the same and this system of preventing a single touch engine kill is present in all cars

Tried this in the Ecosport years ago and this is what happened; the car turned off and the steering assistance and brake booster also turned off. It was coasting as I had pressed the clutch and it started again when I pressed the button with the foot on the clutch.
I never liked start stop buttons and would gladly rip it out if I had the choice, Fords bad placement doesn't help either.

Thanks for sharing! Could be useful to know in an emergency situation.

On a related note, don't ever pull the electronic handbrake button in a moving car because it will lock the brakes! IMHO, it's stupid to have such critical buttons within such easy reach of the front passenger. Imagine a kid playing around?

These features are designed in modern Cars with a vision of ideal Driving culture and habits existing in the countries where they are designed. Where children sit on proper child seats, strapped with appropriate seat belts.
What they miss out is that such ideal culture, conditions and Habits are not followed across the globe.

Copy Pasting those Features to the Indian Market could result in nightmares.
That's where the importance of India specific designs is paramount. The placement of that switch on the Dashboard, would Safely take it out of the reach of kids or any unintentional touch by adults.
All it needs is a shift of placement.

God forbid, we don't want people to get wary of that dangerous button after a few unfortunate souls are hurt.

Another example of such unthoughtful designs is the placement of the Keyless Start-Stop button on the Left side of the Steering near the centre console. Prone to tampering by a kid.

It feels so awkward to start the car with your Left Hand after years of developing a habit of cranking the engine with the Right Hand. Also it offends those who don't like to Start anything with the Left Hand. Pretty insensitive of our great Indian Culture and Values.
Placing it on the Right side would be SAFE and easy to access with the Right Hand. Two birds with one stone!

This was mentioned in one of the start/stop hybrid tech threads. https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/techn...ml#post4338903 (Engine start/stop system - Good, bad or plain rubbish?)

I haven't tried it on my car, maybe some time when I can I'll definitely try and check.

This isn't necessarily the case and might also be vehicle dependent. See the video below for instance.
