disc brake lock up in OHC

ive experienced this twice now in the last 1 month,.,..

i had not used the car continuously for 4-7 days. and on both occassions, when i started the car and set into motion, there was a good sound from the brakes ( i suppose ) as if they had been locked up and getting released when the car set into motion..

is this a normal occurrence or is it time to clean up the brake pads ?

I'd say your wheel bearings need lubrication

If your car is parked in an open space it could be dust getting between the rotor and the pads. If its only when you start, and only for a few seconds, I don't think its anything to worry about.

It happened on my old opel astra once. It was rather due to rain water finding the way into the rear brake drum and the drum locked up when I tried to move. You might check that as well

similar thing happened in my maruti 1000. sorta grinding noise for a while when i start the car and then it disappears in less then a km on the roll. took it to M A S S and lubrication fixed it.

i suggest u get it done soon. i was told ignoring the problem would have resulted in worn out bearing which cost quiet a bit to replace.

A good washing with the wheels removed should solve the problem.

Had similar problem with my esteem but it was due to brake pads touching the disc due to dry "brake caliper pins", got it cleaned and lubricated, working fine since then @30k kms.

do you leave the parking-brake on when you leave the car parked for long periods?

if so, the noise could mean the parking brake locking up....

Is this practice not recommended? Does it have any harmful effects?

I always engage my hand-brake/parking-brake for long periods, short periods ,even while waiting at the signals.

Ditto rahul,in fact I had the same misfortune of having a locked up rear drum on the matiz after I'd parked her with the handbrake on for about a fortnight during the monsoon. It just wouldn't budge and had that scary noise everytime I tried to floor it out. Finally had to call a mechanic who took apart the drum, lubricated and put it back together.Upto that point I felt these things only happened to fiats n amby's :(
