Re: Help! My car's headliner fabric is coming off

I think that the liner sagging in Volkswagen cars is an inherent issue.
I have a 2014 model Audi A6 with a partially sagging liner here in UAE. I am ignoring the issue for the time being.

Headliner fabric replacement - Curtain airbag fuse

A very common issue on euro cars, while used in tropical/warm markets, especially the CKD models which have the premium/soft-touch/cushion-y headliners.

Would be happy if someone with inside knowledge share the root cause of these failures : Is it choice of headliner adhesive vs temperature/humidity or some volatile vapours emitted from different cabin parts causing long term failure of the adhesive etc. Also interested to know if they have been fixed for the newer generation of vehicles from the respective OEMs. In my limited experience with multiple older euro cars within western europe, I have very rarely seen these failures.

We have faced this on our 2010 Superb as well as the 2012 Laura. The cheaper/hard headliners (I am not sure the material/adhesive/fabric layer differences) on our Vento/Polo don't seem to suffer any such sagging concerns. I don't expect them to either considering they don't seem to have additional layers.

An important word of advice to people considering repairs: Some of your vehicles will also have curtain-airbags. Depending on vehicle model, a tear-line/fuse-line may have been integrated into the headliner, which are very carefully designed to ensure the airbags deploy correctly and within the required time frame. This may or may not be in the area where the sagging fabric is being replaced. If it is, please do reconsider your options. Akin to putting seat covers over a car with side airbags on the seat, such a headliner repair can hamper curtain airbag deployment (a few milliseconds late or improper inflation could matter a lot on the injuries suffered).
Note: I am far from an expert on this topic and have only abstract surface level information. Request others with better experience to chip-in.

Hey, where did you get the work done?

Considering the fact that the Jetta comes with curtain airbags, any pointers with respect to that?

Re: Help! My car's headliner fabric is coming off

I had this issue in my 2003 Hyundai accent viva. With time the adhesive starts to disintegrate and lose stickiness. Parking the car in sun accelerates the process and with time the entire roof will start to sag.
To actually fix it, you would need to remove the entire internal roof moulding and scrape off the residual adhesive and reapply new. Reusing the saggy liner is not advisable, since it is not easy to get out the old adhesive from the liner.

I got mine fixed at Orchis in Powai, Mumbai. They specialise in bespoke car seat covers. They did a fantastic job and till date the roof looks like new. Job took about 2 hours and cost me just Rs.1800. Great shades to choose from too

Re: Help! My car's headliner fabric is coming off

Headliners peeling off in VaG cars is common in India due to the scorching heat the roof of the car endures, party due to the daily expansion/ contraction, the adhesive looses its bond with the insulation material. Had the issue sorted for my Jetta when it was in its fifth year. ( it’s 8 yrs running now) Had paid about 7k if I remember. There is a choice of fabrics available, including even exact OEM finish. I stuck with the OEM style.
For cars in Mumbai a visit to the lane in Opera House should work out. Don’t remember the name of the shop but there are a couple of shops in the same lane who do upholstery and seat work. Pricing would be similar. Most of the shops share the fitters so quality of fit would be the same. They are pretty good. Sent my car in the afternoon once was done in about 2 hours. After the job I’d recommend leaving the car parked overnight with the windows slightly open to air out the interiors since the adhesive smells quite strong and it would dry quicker.

I don't recall the cost but I can recommend the guy who did the repairs. Sameer is fantastic, has been taking care of my Yeti for a few years now. He can be contacted at +91 99872 18417. The garage is at Jogeshwari and they do pickups all over Mumbai.

Don't want to give too much of an effusive review, but he saved me a ton of money a few years ago after the Skoda ASS gave me a humongous quote for gearbox related repair and he later correctly diagnosed as a fault in the AC compressor!!!

Finally got the car back apologies for the delay. The side curtain airbags are not affected at all since the airbags are located within the B pillar which have a moulded plastic trim all around.

Sorry, folks, Nasir has been slipping on his commitment to come over and show me the samples. He was supposed to come in last Sunday and since I got busy this week, could not follow up with him save for a WhatsApp message that I sent him that finally went unanswered!

I have my regular guy (he was a senior chap at the Autobahn in Kurla and he has his own setup now) who says he can get it done in 7K. There are a couple of folks in Thane whose references I have received - one Mr. Trilok Singh and another a chap named Vijay Sharma. This weekend, I will reach out to all and decide on the person who can do the job. I prefer to get it done at my residence itself - given the conditions.

Keep you all posted. Cheers!

Don't be devastated, its very common not only with VAG cars but many of the European cars.

Here is a video, which might not exactly help you fixing your car's headliners but might give you an idea about how the things look like or what it might take to fix it.

Hello everyone! My Jetta's headliner just started sagging last week.

Has anyone got this fixed in Hyderabad? If yes, please share your experience and contact details of the workshop.
