Re: Transmission leak on a 10-day old Kia Sonet

Thanks for the replies people!
Here is the update:
Kia agreed to give us free extended warranty for the vehicle and are very positive that the issue will not recur as they've test driven the vehicle and it has been under observation for a few days now.We are going by trust and picking up the vehicle today. Hopefully there isn't anything else wrong with the car.

Cheers

Re: Transmission leak on a 10-day old Kia Sonet

Really feel sorry for the owner as the new car experience is totally spoilt for this car. Nice to hear of at least a small offer from Kia side about the extended warranty. By the way, did the offer come from Kia or the dealer?

Keeping my fingers crossed as I have taken delivery of a Sonet GTX+ diesel AT on 31st December. Hope nothing bad happens.

I’m not disputing the qc issues highlighted in this thread and other threads, but considering the fact that Hyundai and Kia are the only 2 brands who put a regular appearance in the top ten selling cars month after month (other than Maruti), is the qc issues as widespread as it is made out to be? Agee completely that one qc issue is one too many but how are so many of these cars remaining problem free? Different vendors perhaps?

Anybody’s car can develop problems, but how the company deals with it is that finally matters. Mind you, I’m not talking about a deliberate attempt to offload a known defective piece on an unsuspecting customer.

I’ve upgraded from a 2014 i10 Grand petrol which gave me an absolutely trouble fee ownership experience for 6 years.

Hello team
Here is the last update:
The vehicle was neatly polished and interiors vacuumed when returned. We are satisfied with the way Kia has responded.

Taken before delivery:

Hey gopzdoc
I'm pretty sure the offer was from the dealer's end after escalation. The service head was very kind and understanding too. Hope you're loving your new car!

Re: Transmission leak on a 10-day old Kia Sonet

Good to hear that the issue is sorted out, although it would have been great if they replaced the transmission. Nevertheless, you atleast got extended warranty from them.

Can we know how much extended warranty did you get from them?

My uncle took delivery of HTX 1.0 iMt on 21st December. The delivery was expected by the 3rd week of October but was delayed from the dealer's end showing multiple reasons.

Now after reading so much of major niggles in Kia/Hyundai vehicles, we are sceptical that my uncle's vehicle also might have some issues which the dealer cought up during PDI and did some botch up job to sort it out before delivery. Hence the delay.

I suggested Nexon and Ecosport to my uncle as these are proven products but he being a first time car buyer and it being the 1st car in their family, they got lured away by the gizmos(sunroof, touchscreen, LED headlights etc etc) and the so called premium feel of the interior.

Now I have suggested him to take someone (who knows about the mechanicals a bit) with him during the 1st servicing and get a through check-up done.

Heck the nearest service center is almost 300km away from them and he doesn't know driving.

Happy ending. But I didn't understand, what was done to solve the issue?

Did they replace the transmission OR just repaired it? Or is it that they just cleaned the spill overs and put another layer of sealant?

Please elaborate

Hey DevOnWheels
Indeed it would've been a better option to get the transmission swapped but we didn't want to drag the issue for long. The kia dealer gave us an extra 2 years of warranty added to the factory 3 year warranty.

Hey gkveda
No new sealent was applied after the initial fix.The spill overs were cleaned up and the car was taken on multiple test drives to build up oil pressure. This was also mentioned in the service job sheet.

I mean no offense, nor wish to question your decision of accepting whatever resolution Kia dealer offered to you. But at the same time, I strongly feel that they just did some patch up work (juggad) to fix it and unfortunately I have this bad feeling that the issue will crop up again. They should have replaced the transmission, as rightly suggested by the other members. It's not about dragging the issue but fighting for the right thing IMHO.

Since you have now accepted the fix and brought the car back, I wish you good luck and lots of happy miles with it and let's just hope that I'm wrong about this .

I also feel the same that some Juggad work has been done to satisfy you. If it was leaking in the first place then how come just a clean up job of the spill over will stop the leakage. They should have atleast opened it and re-sealed it properly in the presence of Kia technicians/representative.

Re: Transmission leak on a 10-day old Kia Sonet

Two days back I saw two Sonets in a towing vehicle. One was a TD car and other one was a brand new Sonet. On a positive note that new car could be for delivering to a customer at a remote town and the TD car was for dealer persons to return back.

I have a slightly different view of the matter.
Clearly, the leak wasn't big enough to have caused transmission damage due to low oil pressure/impurities getting into the fluid. I mean, it's pretty unlikely IMO.

And say what you will about the current state of affairs at Kia's factory, factory fit is factory fit - I would definitely not want the entire transmission replaced at the dealership for a sump leak. There's no point not enjoying the vehicle for a protracted replacement affair/stressful fight with Kia in the meantime.

Just keep an eye at all services/underbody washes and you should be just fine. It is unlikely that the car will leave you stranded, and in the bargain, you've gotten free extended warranty.

The last thing you can push for is extending the warranty of the transmission even beyond the extended warranty period - upto the fluid change period mentioned in the manual (if it is higher than the extended warranty period).
