Here I have used an engine flush from LiquiMoly. I started to hear a metallic ticking sound at idle at around 280,000 km. The new oil might have helped too.

I did this first time to make sure the ticking was not from the vacuum pump. My car has the diaphragm vacuum pump which is operated by a push rod and not the rotary vane pumps used today.

These pumps tend give up from around 150,000-200,000 km but mine is still going strong at 408,000 km.

This is the same engine used in the Audi A4. The Audi engine has a rotary vane pump.

I later found out that the ticking noises were quite normal but I have treated the car once more since.

Is engine flush recommended for older engines? I mean after so many kilometers?
Usually what I have read in forums including this one is, engine flush is not recommended for older engines as it makes seals ineffective and causes plethora of other problems as well.

I have read that too but my engine was not very dirty inside. I had earlier taken out the drain plug which is 24 mm and shown a torch inside. The oil strainer had the grey colour of steel. The parts of the sump I could see had the silver colour of aluminium.

My car has had regular oil changes with a synthetic oil every 15,000 km mostly with 507 spec Castrol Edge FST. I expected the oilways to be dirty because of the forged surface. The oil I drained out was like black ink.

I buy oil in bulk of about 40 liters of a good known brand that is cheapest. I have used Mobil 1, Magnatec and Elf oils once each. In my world there are no best oils but only good and unknown quality oils.

I stopped the car about an hour from my place and put in the engine flush and drove home. The second time I drove a few days.

Doesn't the manufacturer instruct to just idle the car for only 10 minutes rather than driving the car under load and ideal operating conditions?

Atleast the LiquiMoly and other brands sold in India instruct so.

I too did an Liquimoly engine flush and used their engine oil too for my 185k kms done Laura TDI few months back.I read about these points later. The engine is running fine and is much more silent than before. Touch wood ! I've driven around 3000 kms post that.

Yes their instructions suggest to add the flush and let the engine run at idle for ten minutes and then flush out the oil and add new oil and filter. Below image for reference.

I used the Pro-Line series engine flush. The instructions on my can said 10-15 minutes. The guy at the shop in Romania told me that he lets it work for about an hour.

Whatever, there is no danger if you dont trash the engine after adding the cleaner. I always drive with a light throttle.

I just bought a bottle of liqui Moly Engine Flush Plus off Amazon for my Baleno Diesel with 130k on the odo. Not facing any issues in particular but since I just got its body refreshed I thought some TLC on the engine is also in order

However the instructions on the bottle aren't in English which is quite surprising.


Taking a cue from this thread and also from Google it seems we need to let the engine idle for 10min and then flush the engine oil and replace oil and filter. Some people have on their own accord let the engine run for longer but I'm going to stick with what they manufacturer's say. I plan to hold the idling for about 15 min max.
Will update if I find any discernible difference in the engine noise, idling or mileage.

I have used the odd flush additive in the past. I never got any real results, so I found it a waste of money.

There is only so much a bit of additive in your engine oil can do.

However, if it is available you might want to try a real engine flush. Similar to a real transmission flush. A special machine is used to pump special cleaning agent through your engine / transmission.

I had my Jaguar 4.0 l Supercharged V8 done some time ago. Not sure if it is available in India though. It has been available in the west for diesel engines for some time. But it is available for petrol engines too. It’s not cheap, but it did make a noticeable difference to my Jaguars engine. Also for the very first few hundred kilometers afterwards, the engine oil stayed incredibly clean! The engine was really spotless inside. Also the air inlet and exhaust pipes get cleaned at the same time!
