If buying a used petrol car today, should I specifically go for only e20 compliant cars? This would rule out a lot of pre 2023 cars on the market.

Yes, it is better to look for only e20 compliant fuel cars if you plan to keep it for long. Although I still have a 2002 Maruti Zen which was originally made only for unleaded fuel. It has battled against many changes in gasoline constituents over these years and runs fine still in the currently sold ethanol blended fuel. The only change I feel that due to the fuel, the level of nimbleness has reduced and the overall fuel efficiency has taken a beating. It manages 14KMPL in city traffic whereas earlier it was easily 16.
One thing I was wondering about ethanol blending is that ethanol has higher octane vs petrol but a lower calorific value correct ?
So how is the blending handled such that we still end up with 91 RON even with E20 fuel ?
The government is likely to scale down the percentage of ethanol to be blended with petrol to
18 per cent, against the projected 20 per cent, in the ethanol supply year 2024-25 (November-October) as the vast majority of petrol-fired vehicles, barring Bharat Stage-VI, are not compatible with running on E20 fuel.

So, someone must have assured them 18% is good enough to kill most engines and hence the dial down :Frustrati
Hi,
I wanted to share an observation from today. I live in Greater Noida and usually refuel at one of the largest HP petrol stations here.
Previously, they had markings on their nozzles as you mentioned. However today I noticed that those markings were no longer present. Out of curiosity, I asked the staff about it and they informed me that for regular petrol, all nozzles now dispense E20, while Power 95 is dispensed with E15.
I am not sure if this is consistent across other stations in Delhi NCR as well.
Just thought to share this with you guys.
Dear Members, Need one help urgently. Me and My BIL are driving down to Goa and we stopped in Hubli for an overnight stopover. While refuelling, by mistake, My BIL filled in E20 petrol in his 2017 Hyundai Verna petrol car which is BS4. I am not sure if the car is even E10 compliant or not. It took some 30 litres of E20 fuel. What to do now ? Should we just drive and after burning down half tank refill regular fuel to dilute E20 ? Is it ok to run on E20 one time or should we discard the fuel by emptying the car ? Please help with suggestions ? The car might have had 1/4th regular petrol left and took additional 30lit of E20 fuel.

Nothing is going to happen. I’m 100% certain you’ve already gotten the same fuel (E20) multiple times without knowing. Perhaps this time, the dispenser specifically mentions it, and you’re becoming paranoid.
Enjoy your trip:thumbs up

What do you mean by regular fuel. All most all of the fuel dispensed in Indian pumps has ethanol mixed in it these days, right?
There is no unblended petrol anywhere for the past several years. Everywhere it is ethanol blended, only the % will vary from place to place. Metro cities will have the highest ethanol content. It includes premium petrol too.
My 2009 model Alto (E5 as per owner's manual) and 2000 Splendor (unleaded petrol only) have been running on ethanol blend all these years without any issues.
I remember E5 came to Bangalore sometime around 2003. I was living there at that time.
So this happened in both the IOCL and the BP petrol bunks (side-by-side) in West KK Nagar in Chennai. They used to have one of the petrol dispensing stations marked as E20. I remember seeing the prominent stickers.
Over the last week, the stickers have disappeared. The filling attendants keep insisting it's normal petrol (I don't think they know or care if it's E10 or E20).
While I'm reasonably sure it's indeed E20, and they just removed the sticker to avoid questions from smart-alecks like me, I did not see any noticeable difference in performance between my Brezza and my Grand Vitara when I've filled in the pump. (Due to difference in purchase date, my Grand Vitara is E20-compliant and my Brezza isn't.)
At our homes, we do not have any rats entering the cars as we have a lot of resident stray cats who hunt down anything that moves in exchange for scratches and treats.

In Delhi, normal petrol being sold is now of E20 grade. As such, separate E20 markings are redundant.

I am a bit curious about this post in the E20 thread. Do rats have a fondness for E20 petrol?

Same situation in NCR region. I am told that from here on petrol upto E20 blend will be available . It can be any blend which can vary with each lot.
