Re: Unhappy Tata Harrier owner | Looking for advice & alternatives

Very disappointing to know about the issue. but IMO selling in used car market is not the good option right now as you will be loosing too much at this stage. apart from selling it to get rid of it we should also think about the person to whom you will end up selling, as ultimately he will end up with faulty car sold by you to him. (unless you inform him about the history or sell it to a dealer at even more loss). instead of selling raise a issue on other social media and tag TATA Motors and dealer. connect with higher officials of TATA Motors. i am mostly sure that they will not replace the car but they will have to replace the related parts/Assemblies for permanent solution in place of replacing just the pipe this time.
One more solution is to sell it back to TATA dealer and as a special case insist on some nice exchange price so that you don't loose too much and get a brand new Safari paying a difference amount

1. May 2019 is the date of manufacture.

Re: Unhappy Tata Harrier owner | Looking for advice & alternatives

Sell it and get something that gives you happiness. There is no guarantee if your rotten luck will not follow you with your next car. There is no easy way out. Either take a hit on the resale value and think of missing out on a nice vacation and move on with life or find the next best service centre and fix this issue for good.

The issue does not warrant a replacement car and so do not expect a replacement irrespective of how media can influence these things. Media justice in this case will not work.

You basically have to make a choice and be happy with the choice. My 2 cents is that you will not be happy with even a permanent fix and you are better off selling this car and finding your peace. At the end of the day, it is just a Car.

Sorry to hear your troubles - it sucks to have an car with frequent break-downs. My advise is to sell it off - peace of mind is more important especially traveling so much on the highway with family. Please look at Hyundai Tucson - it’s reliable, spacious and the diesel is fun to drive too. Since it’s at the end of life stage, might get some good discounts too.

I feel you, trust me, I was in the same shoes with my Punto, I was going to all Bangalore dealers to fix it's never ending issues, when my car turned 5 it had leaking EGR, wet seals all over the engine, leaking steering pump etc.. Not one dealer fixed any of the issues, and screwed it even more.

I was worried not to go to a FNG as I would lapse my warranty and was thinking to sell my car at dead cheap price. Family and friends helped me to find a FNG, I gave it a try, and it worked for me. I found a FNG in Bangalore who is a ex-Tata and deals with all FIAT and TATA vehicles and a specialist in MJD, I am happy and trust him with my car.

As on today, my car is 8 years old, and runs exceptionally, all credits to him.

If you are ok on lapsing your warranty by going to FNG, PM me for details. There's no real need to sell Harrier, as you said, Tata Service is at fault, not the car itself.

Thanks dear for your prompt inputs. Mine is Dec'2019 manufactured. So fingers crossed.

During July'19 they updated the clutch and since you took delivery of car that was manufactured prior to update, it seems that they managed to gave you an unsorted one.

I suggest you don't loose heart. Sometimes, things didn't go as we have planned. I request you to get in touch with Tata regional team thru Twitter or some other media. I am sure they will provide you with long term solution. Selling the car will costs you loss and I urge you to avoid at least till the time you have warranty.

Best Regards,

Hi, as a repeat Tata customer and having gone through a similar tale with my last car, let me share my experience.

Actually I had an issue with my earlier car, again a Tata a Vista. So i observed during a drive to Pondicherry that the interior was getting flooded ostensibly from the aircon. I took it to service and it was "fixed", it happened again and again. I escalated to the dealer and then the manufacturer and I ended up with promises and nothing happened. Then one day i drove to the Tata Motors regional office in Chennai and went to their reception and said I want to meet someone to return my car. It caused some surprise and promptly two officers (i still have the phone number of one person) came and asked about the issue. I said I have parked the car in your parking, it s faulty and your service is unable to fix it, take it back and give me my money. They said its not their policy but they did take the trouble and took the car to another service centre ran a deep diagnostic and managed to fix the issue. It never happened again till I sold the car.

When i bought the Nexon, I observed that the car was starting by itself! When i flagged it to the service centre it was shot down, social media did not help. Then I remembered the number of the executive from Tata Motors and they ran the diagnostics twice in two different centers. I am still unclear what was done finally but 20K kms later it never happened again.

In hindsight i think the electronics had a glitch which got fixed. The take away is with Tata products you have to run behind them till you get your fix and it pays to have one contact person you can call repeatedly. Having said that since you have crossed 32kms a sale will be a loss. Please check if you can get Tata to fix it to your satisfaction.
P.S. I stay in Chennai and home town is CBE so i do the runs regularly before the lock downs.

Re: Unhappy Tata Harrier owner | Looking for advice & alternatives

350 kms on the odo at the time of purchase reeks of something shady done by the dealership before they conveniently passed on the car to you. Your car is a lemon, no doubt about that considering all the other parts that have also required replacement in such a short time (my car is at 81k kms now and has not required work on the timing chain till date), but considering the fact that your car has already done 32k kms, I really don't see TaMo giving you a replacement no matter how much you castigate them on social media, or take them to court.

In my opinion, please talk to one of the head honchos in TaMo and request him or her politely to take back the car for a proper diagnostic, preferably at a different service center (I have a feeling that the TASC you are going to is also incompetent) and give you a loaner car (same or better) while they are working on it. Speaking directly to the head honchos helps like anything when it comes to TaMo.

In our family we have had Tata cars for almost 20 years and even now my primary ride is an 8 year plus old Tata car. None of our cars have ever broken down and on numerous occasions their bulletproof build quality has saved us from a lot of trouble. Based on our recommendation many of our friends and family have also purchased Tata cars and none of them have faced any issues and many of them are repeat buyers like us.

Hence you have unfortunately been saddled with a lemon. However you will end up losing a lot of money if you were to sell it because of all the issues. Hence please please exhaust all options when it comes to chasing down TaMo folks, before you decide to sell it.

Re: Unhappy Tata Harrier owner | Looking for advice & alternatives

Crysta owner here:

I was in the same boat as you. However, I did not choose the Harrier as it was a Tata product. I went for the BS6 model of Crysta diesel.

Let me tell you, the car is an absolute tank. Yes, the low speed ride is not great on the 17 inch alloys. However, on highways (where you seem to drive most), you feel practically invincible. The torque on tap, and the power is addictive. It is not the best handler, but neither is any SUV.

Go for a used BS4 version as I don't think even Toyota is free from DPF problems. As Scotty Kilmer says, a fun car that breaks down is not fun!

Re: Unhappy Tata Harrier owner | Looking for advice & alternatives

I sincerely thank all of you for your valuable suggestions, recommendations, and ideas.
Kudos to this forum/community (especially the creators of this community), only through which we are able to voice our thoughts and find an answer, support and help for anything and everything.

Well, here is the update on my car
  1. The car is back with me and Tata (and the SC) has fixed it with some external lining as well to support the hose.
  2. Cijin Thomas (who happens to be the regional service head) spoke to me over the phone. He has assured me that this won't happen again. And he is taking full responsibility.
  3. He assured me that he will do a precautionary inspection every 3 months to check on the routing and hose itself.
  4. Replacing the car is not their policy at all. So only two options - either fix the issue and continue with the car or sell it for another car.
  5. I am not a used car person, neither will my family settle for a used one. My mind (which is ok for a used car) is always trying to convince my heart (always wants a new one). Eventually, my heart wins.
  6. Given my current situation, I will not be able to replace it with a new car at least for the next 6 months due to another financial commitment. So looks like the only choice I am left with is to fix and continue with the car.
  7. Of course, I love the car itself. It is a fantastic product no matter what. It's just that I am unfortunate that I got a lemon.
  8. For now, looks like the issue won't repeat. However, I am still skeptical. Only time will tell. Fingers crossed.

Nice to hear that you got some relief.
- The TML guy taking full responsibility was appreciable.
- The lining thing sounds good, share the pics if feasible.
- If this had happened earlier and by default your hassles would've been reduced a lot.

As you put, time will tell but enjoy the car.
Keep us posted.

Good Luck

Sad to note that this is the condition of most Indian consumer buying public

I would suggest consulting a good lawyer friend if you have any and try to get some of their promises in writing. Through the posts on this thread I have been made aware of how bad the treatment to the consumer can be promises be dammed. See what can be done to strengthen your side as the consumer in this relationship is what I would still urge you to do.

Re: Unhappy Tata Harrier owner | Looking for advice & alternatives

No use fighting with the dealer, fixing it and getting standed somewhere yet again. For the sake of what matters most in life - peace of mind - sell the car and buy something else.

This time stick to reputed brands/proven models.

Innova Crysta would be your best bet. Or just consider this as an opportunity to buy what you always wanted to buy - the compass.
