Hey kev, you seem to be more frustrated than the assassin, are you hand in glove ??? LOL. Get the thing fixed man before you have a situation where you have to scoot in reverse.

Many European cars have this safety mechanism so as to avoid any chances of a person engaging a reverse gear accidently when he wanted to move to the 4th gear instead.
And not any have done this in india even after many years, why are the Europeans so paranoid ?

hi,
You can see the plastic mechanical lock inside the gear lever cover. I think you can try to fix ( lift the lock and hold) it somehow and take to service centre. Thats what i feel on looking at the gera knob of my Palio 1.2 EL.

Somewhere the connection of the nob with the gearbox is broken because now while slotting it in reverse it falls into fourth gear...

Its a Palio 1.2 ELX NV 04 model....

similar failure

My 04 indica lsi was fine till last night. today when i took it out, it wasn't slotting in reverse gear.it either remains in neutral when i release the clutch,or gets slotted in 4th.
is it a complete gearbox overhaul or just some minor adjustments to it will do?unlike the palio, the indica doesn't have the manual lock.

thanks wolf, got it rectified.the part directly below the gear stick had to be replaced, something the mech says has 4 sockets and a needle. Not sure i got that right, was in a hurry.is that the gear syncromesh?

While parking,i slot it into reverse while braking and a fraction of a second before it comes to a halt..it normally results in a thud and a mild jerk.Could that have been the culprit or does it happen?

The recommended way to do this is to let the car come to a standstill, wait for 3-4 seconds and then engage it in reverse gear. It works butter smooth then. Never slot it into reverse when the car is in forward motion, it will give you a grinding sound and might be the cause for your problem.

Palio and Astra have this feature.

Not good reverse technique though, although cannot say conclusivly about direct harm or damage could have been inter-related.
