Most of the damage a car's paint job suffers comes in the form of tiny scratches. Historically, automakers sought to solve this problem by creating tougher finishes. But Nissan recently unveiled a radically different approach: a finish that doesn't try to prevent everyday scrapes but rather accepts and heals them. The secret is a highly resilient resin that when added to a basic acrylic clear coat maintains its state as a flexible solid. When a car is scratched, the resin slowly seeps back into the gouge, virtually erasing the scrape in days. The Scratch Guard Coat is currently available on the Nissan X-Trail in Japan for $420 and will be an option on an unspecified Infiniti model in the U.S. later this year.

That sounds super-cool and a must for India (especially black cars). I had a look at the Nissan website and they claim repairs are made within 1 - 7 days. It seems like some sort of semi-solid that loses shape (with scratches) and then settles down to the original level with time?

A special highly elastic resin has been combined with a conventional clearcoat to increase the paint's flexibility. This has also increased its strength by raising the resin density.

Maybe mass production and localisation of this material may bring down the cost. My car is black, I am going nuts over maintaining the shine, I dont think this will work in India due to the high cost.

Why not, for that kind of money it should work for both. Otherwise it does not make sense

Its definitely worth its costs and the technology for mid-segment cars and above atleast

That may be worth it in US where labour and paint costs are high, but more importantly scratches are less common. My brother drives in London, and he says for 6 years, his car has suffered 1-2 scratches only, and paint remains as good as new. Perhaps something to do with the weather and the drivers. Do you think it will work in India, where you hardly find a scratchless car. No matter how many paint jobs are done, a scratch is inevitable say in max 1 month, and a dent in say 3-4 months.

This is probably the beginning. As time passes by things will get cheaper and better..Good to know some Automakers are thinking on these lines. People go for teflon coats and this seems to be a good alternative if the price tag drops which eventually happens with all technologies as they mature and demand increases

One of the website says....

With "Scratch Guard Coat" a car's scratched surface will return to its original state anywhere from one day to a week, depending on temperature and the depth of the scratch.

This a joint work of Nippon Paint and Nissan.

Hopefully concepts like self-repairing paint will make its way to India soon.

well if people can blow 3000-4000 on Teflon coatings..I'm sure this will be affordable in the longer run to keep the car free from Minor scratches.

Expensive or not: A small example!
Average Person | Average Cell Phone | Average Car

You spend Rs 8,000/- for a cell phone and invest in a good quality scratch guard of almost Rs 300/-. Thats around 3.75%. The scratch guard does not prevent deep scratches, only minor ones.

You spend Rs 500,000/- for a car and find it difficult to invest 4% (Rs 20,000/-) for the self-repairing paint?! This paint MAY prevent deep scratches too.
