Alto Fuel Economy Woes
(
https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/technical-stuff/25241-alto-fuel-economy-woes-7.html)
The FE always depends on driving styles. But of late my car's FE has dropped to 12kms. I always used to get 15kms. I am getting it checked next week when back in Chennai. My driving style has changed at all.
The shuddering people are refering to is indeed a map error. I am trying to get my ECU remapped or changed under warranty.
If everyone is getting 12, then I wouldnt have had any problems.
But the thing is that EACH of my friends who have Alto's claim 15kmpl in city with A/C.
My friends get 12kmpl with A/C in Swifts. That is 1300cc.
My puny 800cc gives same economy. :-(
I too get only 12-13 km/l in my May 2004 Alto LXi. I just checked today. Filled the tank ran for 170 kms on the trip meter. filled again till auto cut-off, it took in 13.60 lts. so the mileage is 12.5. This is in mixed conditions (50% A/c + 40% highway+ 60% city use)
@Scary- I too have this shuddering you have mentioned. But for me it appears only after the car has gone through one cooling period in the day i.e once i start in the morn it is smooth and once i travel 10 kms and stop for say 1 hr and then start the vehicle the shuddering starts. does this happen to you too? or is it there from the start?
@ Ajo- if the above problem is due to the ECU, it never appeared in the last 2 years for me. it only started some 1 month back and I am sadly out of warranty now.
I spoke to the MASS too and they opined that a mileage of 12-13 is what we can expect out of Alto, anything more than that is our luck is what they say.
Anand.S
there are many tech. things we can do to improve the milage-technically by improving the efficiency check out the thread - max kmpl-and how to achive it !:)

Hi, I own a 2000 Alto Vxi - that's the short-lived model with the F10D motor. A year ago I had the engines' head ported, polished, & shaved. Also got a cold-air intake, free-flow exhaust, sports muffler, Iridium plugs, & 175/60R13s. I always go tank-full to tank-full, & have been using only Speed97 in my car ever since it became available. Even with all these mods, in the city, my car returns an average of 11.5 Kms/liter with frequent A/C use. On two highway runs to Coimbatore, I got 18.0 Kms/liter.
Pinkish-brown coloration of spark-plugs is generally considered a good indication that your engine's running neither lean, nor rich. If tire pressure's are not too low, binding brakes could be an issue. Maybe an easy test would be to simply jack the car up, & try rotating the wheels, one at a time to see if they rotate freely. Could a clutch problem, like a slipping clutch, reduce fuel efficiency ?

off topic, is your engine designed to use 97 octane? ever compared 87 octane and 97 octane in your car?
Hi Vivek, no - I don't think the F10D motor was designed with 97 octane in mind, i.e. if by design you meant compression ratio (well not exactly CR, but absolute pressure at TDC). I've progressively upgraded from pump-gas, to Speed, Speed93, & now Speed97, as & when they became available here in Chennai. The engine seemed to run smoother when I switched to Speed all those years ago, but the rest (Speed93 & Speed97) did not bring out any perceivable differences. I remember that my engine used to knock close to the rev-limit with pump-gas, & now I guess, Speed97 helps with knock since I'm running a shaved head.
lowest octane petrol which will resist knock in your car will give u highest fe!
u got the engine modded for low end grunt or top end blast? u cant have both unless too much of money is spent on it !--
even the presence of naptha will colour the plug chocolate brown!!! :Shockked:

Update:-
Lastest figure is 11kmpl. City conditions. Light foot. No idling at traffic lights or being stuck in traffic jams. Light cruising in top gear whenever possible.
70% A/C.
I will go for fueling today and will post the statistics by tomm !!!

i think its too low FE but why:Frustrati.if my alto start returning these figures so then i m gonna
Mod's Note: Only a max of 2 smilies per post please. Extra smilies edited out.
Guys,
I think you should get 15-16 in the city.
My wagonR Lxi gives avg 14 in bangalore city traffic with 30-40 % ac On.I use only shell normal petrol. The worst i got in last 8 months was 13.83 and the best city figure was 14.45 (last fill).
Hi All,
I am getting around 12 kmpl in my Alto LXI with around 70% time AC on. My vehicle is under 1000 km run till now. Is this acceptable mileage ??
Wanted to know if a loose clutch increases fuel comsumption? I asked to tighten my clutch in the last service and need to check the FE now. It was 12kms (Dropped from 15kms 3 months back) in heavy traffic with full AC.
