Re: Typical annual maintenance costs of your car

Car < 1 year old, so covered under free service so far.

Absolute service costs across segments may not give much insight. I suggest we capture more details like vehicle segment, age, location, FNG/ASS, insurance, spares, labor etc in a spreadsheet.

And trust the innovative analysts on the forum for insights .

Not sure if a spreadsheet is possible on the forum itself. Something like a google sheet will be open for anyone, so thats a problem I suppose. Mods?

Re: Typical annual maintenance costs of your car

Skoda Laura L&K 2006

Insurance : INR 14000 per year
Annual service : ~15000-22000 per year
Spare replacement : ~80000 to 100000 per year :-). Since my car is old, replacement is proving to be very very expensive.

Re: Typical annual maintenance costs of your car

I have opted for 2 years preventive maintenance service pack @INR 12,199/- for my 2018 Skoda Rapid MPI, that translates to yearly service cost of INR 6100/-. As far as I don't request for any value added services the regular preventive maintenance service bill is well below INR 10,000.

Re: Typical annual maintenance costs of your car

Chose between 25 and 50k. My car has been running 40k a year for the last 2 years. It’s a 12 year old Fortuner which gets serviced at the AD every 9000 km like clockwork.
The high running is due to highway use so the wear and tear is lesser per km.
Each service runs to around 11k on avg.

I was thinking about the same when I started the poll. However, I have kept it simple for now and folks can go through the actual comments for more insights.

However, if the mods agree I would love to make this more comprehensive based on, age of car, FNG/company, petrol/diesel/EV, etc. That would truly be a good open database that we can maintain and also get to know trends over the years.

@mods is that a possibility?

Re: Typical annual maintenance costs of your car

I ticked between 25 - 50 K for my Renault Duster 85PS 2013 and also the Baleno

For the Duster, typical insurance cost now is 12-13k.
Average Maintenance cost at ASC had been anywhere between 15-35K depending on the specific year. One year it was the starter motor, another brake pads+AC belt+fuel pipe, etc. and then the tyres which would be in the 17-20K range for a pair.
This year's been the lowest - 7K so far at an FNG. A few issues viz Brake disks and suspension replacements were postponed in view of limited driving.

For my Baleno which is relatively new, 2018 CVT. average maintenance exclusive of insurance is about 13K without any defects. The ASCs are expensive and being in warranty I have no choice.
Insurance cost is about 17K annually. Adds up to the 25-50k bracket.

Two cars at home- A (2018) Ford Ecosport S TDCI and a (2021) Kia Sonet IMT HTX.
Service cost for both remains lesser than 6K for the two services the cars have undergone under my ownership.

Therefore, voted less than 10 K.

Voted for 10K to 25K for my 2008 model Civic 1.8V. Typically I give the equipment thrice in an year to ONLY HASS. No problems so far. As smooth and reliable as it was in 2008.

Re: Typical annual maintenance costs of your car

Pre pandemic I used to get my car serviced twice a year (costing 7 to 9k per service) but of late It is once a year. Plus now hat I'm out of warranty I can maybe try an FNG as well. I own an S cross Zeta (2017) that's covered 78k.

Re: Typical annual maintenance costs of your car

We have a 2009 Honda City SMT that we purchased in 2018. It is serviced at an FNG. The car just came back from a comprehensive service (new iridium spark plugs, treating rusted spots, new window beadings, oil & oil filter change, wash, and routine stuff here and there). The total came to ₹12,500.

So far, we've had to replace some AC parts (total being in the ₹20-25k ballpark) and suspension work (₹5-10k ballpark). The costs have been very reasonable so far given the age of the car and the roads it typically sees.

If I had to estimate the total cost of ownership (excluding fuel and insurance) over the four years of ownership, my estimate would be in the ₹75-85k ballpark. This includes all the services, a fresh set of tyres, a taillight replacement, some cosmetic work, and a new battery. Insurance is ₹5-6k per year (Acko Insurance with NCB).

Since this was our first used car, we were a little hesitant and asked a Honda service centre about a warranty/comprehensive car service package. They quoted a ridiculous ₹60k for a year! I get that the age of the vehicle worked against the quote, but it is interesting to see how four years of service and routine maintenance expenses have cost us less than what Honda quoted for a year...

The total usage so far has been around 18,000 kilometres. If we assume a fuel economy of 10km/l, we have used 1,800 litres. This equates to a fuel cost range between ₹162,000 (at ₹90/litre) to ₹190,000 (at ₹106/litre). Given how much our usage has been, the actual number is probably closer to ₹170k.

Summing it all up, we get ₹257,000 on the lower end and ₹299,000 on the higher end. If we ignore the time value of money, a simple average gives us an answer of between ₹64,250 and ₹74,750 for the yearly total cost of running.

To me, the total cost is interesting as we acquired the City for ~₹300,000, too! It's served us well so far and we recently dropped the idea of replacing it because of the lack of options that would feel like an upgrade but are still easy on the pocket.

I know this isn't just the annual maintenance, but I thought this post would serve as a good way to summarize the expenses incurred so far

Here's a picture:

Re: Typical annual maintenance costs of your car

Is it purely maintenance cost, or can include Insurance cost as well.

1) Annual break-up for my Jazz CVT:
> Service cost: Honda recommends 6-month service interval, and, i prefer to get the car serviced with Dealerships only.
2 services per year -> 12K

> Insurance cost: 15K

Total per year: <27K

2) Annual break-up for Toyota Etios Liva V (now sold):
> Service cost: Toyota recommended interval is 10K kms/12-months whichever is earlier, which roughly translates to service once a year.
For first 2 years(under standard warranty), service cost: 3.5K
Beyond warranty period: 5.5K

> Insurance cost: 15K/

Total per year: ~20K

Re: Typical annual maintenance costs of your car

Vote would be > 50K

I drive a minimum of 5000 kms / month. So, naturally the annual service cost would be greater than 50K.

Ciaz Diesel ( Purchased in 2017 and sold in 2022 ) - Rs. 2.50 lacs through 4.5 years. So, averages about Rs.55,000 per year. The service was done mostly at FNG.

Nexon Diesel ( Purchased in May 2022 ) - So far I have completed 3 free services which costed less than 2000 altogether. The 4th service, completed recently at 22,500 kms, costed about Rs.4000.

Because service interval for Nexon is 7500 kms, I expect the cost for the year to be around Rs.75,000
