Are you sure they are selling you the Service (aka Workshop) Manual and not tthe Service Book (he one that comes with the new car). It happened to me - after pursuing with M&M for 2 months, they gave me a new Service Book!!!!

You inspired me to fire a mail to GM, let's wait. I'll update with the feedback.

Jalsa777 & Ashthedivx,

I will agree with hvkumar here - it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that they will be sending you a WORKSHOP / SERVICE manual.
They will just send you a copy of the owners manual that you got when you bought the car.

im planning to buy the Skoda Laura very early. when asked for service manual t the showroom people they wrote back that the owners manual comes with the car you dont need an extra one. Have written back telling them what a service manual is. and told them that will buy the car when given the service manual.

If anyone of you could help me source the manual it will be highly appreciated.

You can buy the Hayne's manual for the Octavia in UK. Google Haynes or Briskoda. The engine is the same 1.9 TDI. Gearbox could be different if you are planning to buy the Laura DSG.

This is what skoda people wrote back with my queries:

Dear Mr.Aman,

Thank you for your interest in the Skoda Laura.

To avoid original cartons being misused in the local market for packing spurious parts we avoid selling spare parts across the counter. The other reason for no retail sale of spares to customers directly is that we insist customers to fix the required spares at our authorized dealerships by technically trained personnel; this is due to the nature of technicality and electronic components involved in the vehicle. Moreover our parts carry a one year warranty only if fitted at our authorized dealerships. To avoid our esteemed customers to loose their privileged of this warranty we do not sell our spares across the counter.

We will not be able to provide you with the workshop manual as they are confidential.

Hope I have been able to answer your queries.

Kindly do let me know if you require any further clarification.

Subject: Informaton Regarding Laura

Sir,

I am writing to you in regard to your product Skoda
Laura.

I am residing in Rohtak, Haryana. I owner of a Skoda
Octavia and an Opel Astra.I was planning to replace
the Opel Astra for the Laura but there have been
instances previously which deter me from buying your
product.

1. Im located in Rohtak which is quite far from any of
your present locations. So even to get a single part
you have to send the car all the way to the service
station and requires one day. This is simply not
feasible in long run of the car.(Bought the Octavia as
it was launched). So i have an whole idea of owning a
Skoda.

So i would request you to please make available the
counter sale of parts. So that it is less painful for
us.

2. Another question is that can you provide me the
WORKSHOP Manual for the Laura?
With the Workshop Manual tiny bit work can be
performed at my place only.Among other things some
other Do It Yourself work on the car can be carried
out easily and without damaging other things.

Your early and postive reply is requested.

while i appreciate your location and the inconvenience etc that you must probably undergo, when the Skoda goes for servicing, it is hardly surprising that you got such a reply.

Of course the workshop manual is a confidential document. If this were not the case, then every shekar, sarabjeet and harikrishnan would open his own road side Skoda service centre and probably muck up a lot of cars, since they wont have the necessary specialized electronic and other equipment required to diagnose and then service a modern generation vehicle. It is for the same reason that they will not do an OTC sale of parts to consumers.

you can appreciate this when you view it from Skoda's point of view and just think, in case your car goes wrong while servicing at a local mechanic, imagine what trouble that would cause!

Suggest that you factor in availability of service centres and the inconvenience and time taken for servicing etc when you are buying a new car.

cheers

err: if any one is interested.. the language is polish.

Service manuals for all GM cars are avilable form the dealer at a cost ranging from Rs 2,500 to Rs 6,000. Rs 2,500 being for the Chevy Spark. The same is written on the 3rd page of the owner manual of the Spark!
