Gear lever play in OHC VTEC.

hi, it's me again. i'm completely satisfied with my VTEC. but i wanted to ask about it's gear lever play. i think the gear lever play is more than my earlier OHC 1.3 Exi.

my VTEC is in excellent condition. it's done only 59,000 kms and all its services has been done at honda service centre itself. but this gear lever play, ruins the "new car" feeling just a little bit.

is it normal for cars to have excessive gear lever play?
can it be corrected?
if so, how?

thank you guys.

What exactly do you mean by excessive gear lever play? At what point of time while driving do you feel this? And in what gear?

hi iraghava. thank you for replying. others doesn't seem to bother.

excessive gear lever play means that the gear lever is not tight. that is when the gear lever is in gear (1st or 2nd or .........), it can be moved to either sides as if it's in neutral (although not as much as in neutral though).

can it be corrected?

there will be some plastic/rubber bush in the gear lever assembly, replace them and it will be back to company spec. I am not sure if Honda will sell the part separate, otherwise they will insist on changing the assembly, like i was asked to by FORD!!

There is always going to be some side-to-side play in the lever even if it is in gear so no worries about that. You should worry if the gear lever starts around moving as much as it does in neutral while in gear. Otherwise don't bother.

IS it NHC Vtec?

Though my NHC is not Vtec (it's iDSI), there is no play in the gear lever.

In fact the smooth short and precise gear shift is on eof the charms of Honda.

Ask the dealer to fix it.

Re: Gear lever play in OHC VTEC.

I had similar problem in my Tata Indigo car in last September (2005-Petrol), after 5 years and fifty thousand KM of service. It was repaired by TASC guys by replacing what they said was the "Gear Shift Linkage Bush Kit". It had a cost of only rupees one hundred and fifty nine (I still retain the bill), but labor charges were extra. I am sorry I do not know much about OHC VTEC cars.

Re: Gear lever play in OHC VTEC.

Or you can upgrade to Polyurethane shift linkage bushing. Way better than the rubber stuff sold in stealerships.

Re: Gear lever play in OHC VTEC.

I had the same problem in my NHC. During the inspection it is found that the gearbox beading has some crack. After replacing this, (~2500/.) the excess play is stopped.

Thanks
Rajesh
