Hi Guys,

first of all congratulate me as i have become Bhpian now(the newbie tag really irritated me).

i am celebrating my freedom with my second topic and i think this is in the right forum.

here goes.

u guys know that it takes certain kms running for the car to reach it's best performance. some people say after second service or at 5000 kms.but with personal experience i think after 10000 kms the car gets hold of itself. for example i was driving my friends new IKON flair(6000kms done on the meter) yesterday and throttle was not as i responsive as mine on which i have done 25000 kms.

similarly with xeta (15000 Kms.) is more responsive now then earlier.
i was told by tata guys that they put throtle contol till the second service for the betterment of the car but the car only started responding after reaching 10000 kms.

now the question is:- i need to know from all you guys which car you drive and after how many kms. you got the peak performance from the car?

all the gurus are invited to please share their technical knowledge on the subject.

My NHC has covered close to 11K Km. For first 2K Km, the suspension was a bit stiff. After that it has really softened. Apart from this, no other difference in the car. The difference in me is my ability to drive this car has improved.

40k on my ohc1.3. newer stickier tyres, k&n, Castrol Magnatec, new sparks, and she hits 140 like nobody's business unlike ever before, and then climbs to 160 if there's road left

Hi Manu,

I haven't felt that cahnges in specific for my Ikon flair, however after 2nd service I felt the car more matured.

For most cars , i experienced that one needs to take out on good long drives to kick up all the reflexs in the machine and so it gets tuned.

I am pretty sure the car gets season if you take it long drives.

I feel that a car really comes onto its own after crossing the 12000 - 15000 km mark.

I'd say 20,000 km - everything is run in and the car feels perfect.

As GTO said, a powerplant settles down by 15K on its odo. All moving parts get seated well and have a pretty good run-in. My 2 cents:

After clocking the 1st 5000 Kms within the city limits, one should do a long drive of minimum of 300 kms at a stretch. Such a long drive really opens the 'pores' of the car and smoothens it up. But one thing is to be kept in mind - a regular service schedule should be strictly maintained for long years of trouble free driving pleasure.

Since you have not, you must. Driving your vehicle over a long distance also makes you understand the behaviour of your car better. You get to hear and know various sounds etc., that eventually tell you how your car is behaving.

I am told modern cars come with pre-tuned engines. Do them really need a run-in period, as was required in the case of earlier generation vehicles. I bought an Aveo and in its manual there is no mention about a run-in period. GM asks the user not to push the engine in the first 100 km, that's all. Having said that, how true is the statement that the FE would improve "after the first service"? My idling rpm is set at 1000; will they change it in the first service?

as per my knowledge a petrol car takes around 10000kms and a diesel takes 18000-20000kms to settle and give the best output.

i never felt any difference my petrol engine cars coz i used to do pretty aggressive run in with them, only the gear shift used to loosen up and parts start to rattle. otherwise same ol same ol.

diesel yes after 5 the car definitely felt better, again my runnin were quite different and more aggressive. power difference i dont think so, fe climbed by a km

all the diff that one feels with regards to suspension etc, has more to do with fallin i love with the car than actual affect of run in..

I think all brand new cars are best during 15k to 30 k kms of normal running! Thereafter the life of parts deteriorates and the 'overall' performance go down! This is the case atleast with the A, B & C segmants
