No problem.

Is it equivalent to a VIN?

I don't think so.

Normally TATA VIN starts from letter MAT and in this case its NAG.

The first two letters letters assigned to India for VIN is in the range of MA-ME

Can you find any different 17 digit number on this Car Starting from MAT ?

So there should be a VIN other than this!

Let me see whether I can get this info. My friend is 80kms away and the dealer is a further 60kms away.

The uncooperative dealership person does not know a VIN and this was what was given.

If they were cooperative, we would have been getting delivery of this vehicle, but, now it will be delivered after a fortnight as my friend is out of station for 10 days.

If I get any more info I will post here.

Thanks for the help.

Look under the bonnet. In addtion to the 17 digits mentioned above there will be 2 more characters at the end of this.

AA - Jan 2010
BA - Feb 2010

If the 19th character is 9 instead of A, then its a 2009 model.
